Our Purpose

The Impact Institute understands the influence Black men and males of color have on children, schools, communities, and the field of education.  

Through various initiatives such as the Black Male Teacher Residency, The Impact Institute exists to specifically address the professional effectiveness and personal growth of Black males and males of color.  

Black Male Teacher Residency Overview

The Black Male Teacher Residency (BMTR) is designed to recruit, reach, and retain Black men and males of color.  This initiative is a two-year residency program based upon the needs of Black men and males of color.  

Through tailored professional development, content and pedagogical training, mentoring, and ongoing support, we elevate their professional effectiveness and personal growth. 

Residency Benefits

  • Financial Support:  Earn as you learn, participants will be provided with a salary and benefits while working towards the completion of their teaching credentials. 
  • Professional Development/Networking: Participants will receive specialized professional development focused on content, pedagogy, and maximizing your impact as a Black male teacher. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to attend conferences and networking events centered around the importance, development, and success of Black Male Teachers.    
  • Theory into Action: From day 1, Fellows will be working to apply pedagogical theory and best practices in the classroom as they work to attain a Master of Arts through American University’s 18 Month MAT Program.
  • Gradually Transition: Unlike traditional teacher preparation programs, BMTR provides participants a gradual transition into full-time teaching. This allows participants to ease into the role of a teacher, gaining confidence and competence over time.
  • Mentoring/Coaching: BMTR Residents will receive individualized training and coaching to support their personalized development plan and student academic targets during and post residency.
  • Go Far Together: Participants will meet, attend class, and matriculate in cohorts or groups designed to collaborate, support, and share best practices as Black male teachers.   
  • Job Placement: Receive Lead Teacher placement support within Friendship Public Charter School or partnering school districts upon completion of the program.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Selected residents will participate in an intensive Summer Institute leading to a year-long placement with a highly-effective Mentor Teacher.
  • In year one, Resident Teachers will receive an individualized plan to guide their coaching needs and student goals.
  • Partake in a deliberate framework designed to perfect his content and pedagogy.
  • Gradually transition from an assistant role to a lead teaching role with his Mentor Teacher.
  • Conduct ongoing “highly effective observations” to synthesize practices applicable to their own practice and student outcomes.
  • Residents will participate in monthly meetings to convene with other Black male educators that will serve as “mutual mentors” in this urgent work.
  • Upon successful completion of the residency year (year one), residents will acquire priority consideration for lead teacher placement at an FPCS campus or partnering school (year two).
  • Residents will continue to receive ongoing coaching, mentoring. professional development, and support.

Qualifications

Targeted Recruitment

Black males, males of color, and individuals with unique backgrounds such as recent college graduates, career changers, or new to teaching.  

Qualifications

  • A desire to learn, grow your craft as a teacher and maximize your impact as an educational leader. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Academic Degree
  • Driven and motivated to improve the academic experience of students
