Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school, seeks an Interim 7th and 8th Grade English Teacher who genuinely appreciates and actively supports the Quaker philosophy that underlies our school for SY 24-25. This full-time benefits-eligible one-year Middle School interim position is based on the Washington, DC, campus and will begin in August 2024.

Reporting to the Middle School Principal, this role is primarily responsible for teaching English and advising a group of 7th and 8th grade students. Other responsibilities include writing student reports three times a year, attending annual parent-teacher conferences, effectively communicating and collaborating with students, colleagues, and families, attending meetings, performing duties such as lunch and break duty, and collaborating with Science colleagues in the Middle School and other divisions. The omission of specific responsibilities does not preclude duties logically related to the position from being assigned.

  • A bachelor’s or advanced degree is required, preferably in English Literature or Education, and must be conferred by the start date of the position.
  • Active CPR certification or can quickly obtain one.
  • Experience teaching English / Language Arts, specializing in writing, literature, and grammar.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the needs of Middle School students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with a group of adults in a team setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand the age group and be excited about working with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based and in-person.
