Sidwell Friends, a co-educational independent Quaker day school in Washington, DC, seeks an Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs for its Upper School Division (grades 9-12). The Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs works closely and assists the Principal with all Upper School matters, including overseeing the Upper School academic program, supporting teachers, curriculum development, scheduling, and clerking the Department Heads committee. The Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs is also responsible for monitoring student academic performance and supervising the Learning Support Team. The Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs works closely with all constituencies– students, parents/guardians, faculty/staff. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills (written and oral), and high emotional intelligence.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to develop a deep understanding of the Sidwell Friends School academic program and those of other independent and public schools, both domestic and international. As the leader of the academic program at the Upper School, the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs will support students through their educational journey in the School, educate parents so they understand the various academic pathways and opportunities available for students, and lead faculty through curriculum development work.

A master’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience as a classroom teacher and administrator in an independent school are required. This position is based on the Washington, D.C. campus and will begin July 2024.
