Teacher Assistant with Medical Background/Experience Preferred

The Monarch School and Institute provides an innovative, therapeutic education for individuals with neurological differences—such as those associated with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder, learning disabilities, Tourette syndrome, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, traumatic brain injury and seizure disorders. We offer a learner-centered approach that helps students progress in Four Core Goal areas.

Teacher Assistants at The Monarch School report to the Program Director and are considered members of the school faculty. Their primary responsibility is to support student growth in each of the four core goals of The Monarch School, assist the Professional Educator to aid students in understanding subject matter, as well as to provide skills required for programmed lessons and purposeful training for the classroom assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., Nursing, Health Sciences, or a related discipline) preferred
  • High school diploma required
  • Experience working with individuals with neurological differences or special needs is preferred

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Medical Support:
    • Monitor and document students' health and medical needs throughout the school day.
    • Assist in managing students' medical emergencies and provide first aid when necessary.
    • Collaborate with Program Directors and Professional Educators to ensure the well-being of students.
  • Classroom Assistance:
    • Assist teachers in implementing individualized education plans for students.
    • Flexible and able to move with young, active students.
    • Support students in classroom activities, ensuring they stay engaged and on task.
    • Be part of a team that values and builds a structured and inclusive learning environment that accommodates students with diverse needs.
  • Behavioral Support:
    • Implement behavior management strategies in accordance with the school's policies and guidelines.
    • Collaborate with the behavioral support team to address and manage challenging behaviors.
    • Foster a positive and supportive atmosphere for students, promoting social and emotional growth.
    • Provide support for toileting needs as needed.
    • Participate in Safety Care training.
  • Data Recording:
    • Maintain accurate records of students' medical needs, behaviors, and progress.
    • Assist in tracking and documenting goals and objectives.
    • Share observations and insights with the teaching and therapy teams to facilitate individualized support.
  • Communication:
    • Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to ensure a cohesive approach to student support.
    • Communicate regularly with Professional Educators regarding students' progress and any medical concerns.
    • Attend team meetings and professional development sessions as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions range in a wide variety of challenges and deadlines. The best candidate should be able to perform well under pressure, think logically, remain calm, and be a great problem solver. Although the position is emotionally rewarding, and provides endless opportunities to have positive effects, it can be stressful at times. Ability to lift to 40 pounds. Frequent standing, kneeling, stooping, and bending. Ability to move desk, classroom equipment and adaptive equipment. Ability to support and keep up with active, young students.
