About KIPP NYC

KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx.  Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students.  Today, our New York City network is comprised of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 9,350 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 850. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and opened two new middle schools and an elementary school August 2021!

Job Description

Position Overview

The Managing Director, Teaching and Learning Support (TLS) Team supports the K-12 academic vision and leads the execution of the teaching and learning strategy to produce transformational outcomes for all students. This role is primarily responsible for directly managing the Teaching and Learning Support Team made up of K-8 content directors (ELA, Science, Social Studies, and Math) to ensure strong strategy, execution, and school-based coaching and support to drive results for students. The Managing Director, Teaching and Learning Support Team reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer and collaborates frequently with the Managing Director of Student Support Services and the Managing Director of Data and Assessments.

This role is based in NYC and will require travel to our schools. Cadence and frequency of travel to schools is determined by your leadership team. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.

General Duties and Responsibilities (but not limited to):

Managerial Leadership and Team Management

  • Manage team of content directors and academic operations to effectively execution on KIPP NYC strategic academic and coaching vision across 19 schools.
  • Develop team members to more effectively execute on their roles and responsibilities in specific competencies (coaching of leaders and teachers, strategic thinking, curriculum writing, project planning, communication, etc.)
  • Provide meaningful and rigorous thought partnership to all members of the TLS team to ensure that strategies are meaningful, data collection is rigorous, and content upholds the bar of excellence for all students.
  • Lead team meetings and team building activities to unite a team of highly capable and highly performing individuals to work together to a common goal.

Strategic Planning and Change Management

  • Collaborate with the CAO and Senior Directors of Content on TLS to define vision and strategy for improving academic outcomes for all students that involve curriculum, teacher development, and leader development to drive towards schools with joyfully rigorous learning culture.
  • Plan thoughtful strategic plans in execution of academic vision at KIPP NYC.
  • Lead change management for all stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of any new strategy or change (including, but not limited to curricular and assessment changes, coaching strategy, etc.)

Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction

  • Oversee implementation of the curriculum and assessments across all content areas for all KIPP NYC schools, including K-4, 5-8, and 9-12 grade bands, in collaboration with TLS team members, regional and school-based academic leaders
  • Manage and lead curriculum-expert directors responsible for designing standards aligned curriculum and professional development across elementary schools, middle schools and high school
  • Manage and forge external relationships with curriculum and teacher development partners
  • Develop, lead and oversee innovative learning initiatives, including learning management systems, online assessment and student achievement benchmarks, in addition to curriculum and instruction support for all teachers to provide all KIPP NYC students with a high quality, impactful in-person and remote learning experience

Data Fluency

  • Develop and design data systems and structures that help drive strategic decisions to improve student outcomes.
  • Analyze regional data in collaboration with regional leaders and school-based leaders to create action plans that promote student achievement
  • Collaborate with the Data and Assessment Team to create and manage a system for sharing assessment data results and analyses to the greater KIPP NYC teacher and leader community.

School Support

  • Observe instructional practices in schools to identify and address curriculum design and professional development gaps
  • Collaborate with school-based leaders and teachers to devise meaningful action steps that improve student outcomes
  • Align team resources and coaching to strategically support all schools within KIPP NYC towards alignment and excellence

Professional Development

  • Design and implement regional professional development to ensure implementation of unified curriculum and best practices to improve classroom instruction and drive student achievement
    • Design and lead the summer professional development institutes for leaders,  New to KIPP hires, and returning staff members, in collaboration with regional content and student support teams
  • Design and implement region-wide professional development and professional growth strategy for teachers and leaders

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education or related education field, preferred
  • Minimum 10 years exemplary teaching experience with strong student achievement results 
  • Minimum 7 years exemplary coaching and leading effective professional development for adults
  • Minimum 7 years effective team management and leadership experience
  • Regional/district level experience highly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organization 
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Strong curriculum writing skills, data fluency skills, and understanding of standards across content areas, including being able to learn content quickly to coach other experts
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment with the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $152,440 to $189,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
