Washington, DC
This is the 2024 fellowship description for this mentor organization. This position has been filled.
As the largest private sector labor union in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada. Our members work primarily in retail food stores; food packinghouses and processing plants; department and drug stores; chemical facilities; and in the distillery and cannabis industries.
Peggy Browning Fellows work closely with attorneys to produce legal research and writing on important worker issues, including labor and civil rights laws and related legal proceedings and legislation. Fellows’ work product supports the goals of the union’s officers and staff, including to further organizing campaigns and engage in legislative advocacy at the federal and state level. Fellows also assist in developing potential litigation and counseling decision-makers, including affiliate local unions and the UFCW’s regional and program-level staff. We involve Fellows as much as possible in discussions with attorneys and staff so that Fellows may understand how their work fits into the union’s wider mission, and how unions develop strategies for organizing workers and advancing worker interests.
During the summer, attorneys engage with Fellows to ensure they come away with a solid understanding of union-side labor law and the real-world issues workers face. In keeping with our commitment to build a strong labor bar, all of the UFCW attorneys endeavor to ensure that Fellows have ample learning opportunities, resources, and career networks.
Fellows will have opportunities to network with law clerks at other labor unions through AFL-CIO programs. In addition, we encourage our fellows to attend workshops, lectures or similar programs relating to labor and employment law.
The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $8,000. If fellows desire to work more than ten weeks, they will be paid $800 for each additional week.
We expect that fellows will work in-person at our office located at 1775 K St. NW, Washington, D.C.
