Culinary Facilitator

The Monarch School and Institute is dedicated to providing an innovative, therapeutic education for individuals with neurological differences—such as those associated with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder, learning disabilities, Tourette syndrome, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, traumatic brain injury and seizure disorders. We offer a learner-centered approach that helps students progress in Four Core Goal areas.

The Culinary Coordinator at The Monarch School reports directly to the EMERGE Program Director. Their primary responsibility is to support student in baking and culinary employment. The Culinary Coordinator is also responsible for managing the entire culinary program.

REPORTS TO THE EMERGE PROGRAM DIRECTOR

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum bachelor’s degree in special education, education, or business preferred.

5 to 8 years’ experience providing services to persons with neurological differences. Have a Food Safety Manager’s Certification or is able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Seed to table type or horticulture experience/interest to support the culinary enterprise of growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables to be used in the culinary program.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Implements The Monarch School model of teaching with special emphasis on the development of students’ self-regulation, executive functioning, relational development skills and professional competence.
  • Actively participates in the development of a mentally healthy school community.
  • Participates in the development of student development plans.
  • Appropriately supervises students at all times, including required after school hours and weekend activities.
  • Works with the lunch prep class to plan for, budget, and harvest items for school lunches.
  • Plans yearlong culinary business activities and lessons that address individual differences in student learning styles in authentic learning practice areas.
  • Serves as teacher of record for baking opportunities such as Baking I., Baking II., Advanced Baking, Culinary Employment, etc.
  • Supports the sponsorship of student run businesses and business development activities, of the Life Academy projects, and events.
  • Coach students with particular emphasis on those areas indicated as most pivotal in the students’ targets, skills, and strategies. Supports students by participating in documentation and reporting to Integrated Learning Practice faculty about all aspects of student plans and actions.
  • Learns new curriculum models as directed.
  • Supports students’ therapeutic agenda in coordination with Integrated Learning Practice Team.
  • Demonstrates cooperative team skills and considers teammates in all decisions.
  • Establishes yearly goals and allows Director to coach him/her in the attainment of those goals.
  • Supervises community events, festivals, and other non-school functions as necessary including after hours and weekend activities.
  • Participates as a Monarch Community citizen established in the Monarch Handbook.
  • Reports student progress in designated formats at specific intervals and in a timely manner.
  • Participates in continuing professional education for the improvement of the school.
  • Supports and models the philosophy, goals, and visions of The Monarch School.
  • Attends all faculty meetings and in-services as directed.
  • Provides instruction for baking and culinary employment classes.
  • Promote a focus on well-being through mindful eating and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors and other faculty regarding the use of the facilities.
  • Supervises the culinary school-based businesses (students) for purchasing of materials for The Monarch School
  • Coordinates speakers, volunteers, and other teaching faculty to integrate instructional and professional opportunities for students regarding culinary enterprises.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors and Monarch Leadership on long term planning and direction of the culinary program.
  • Improves professional development through continued educational opportunities, as available and needed.
  • Stays abreast of the Heath Department Regulations to maintain our Food Establishment Permit
  • Seeks out businesses to build partnerships and become vendors for items regularly made in Culinary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS

  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and strong written/verbal communication skills.
  • Highly skilled in working with individuals living with neurological difference to build relationships.
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) and Outlook.
  • Exhibit ethical behavior and confidentiality.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions range in a wide variety of challenges and deadlines. The best candidate should be able to perform well under pressure, think logically, remain calm, and be a great problem solver. Although the position is emotionally rewarding, and provides endless opportunities to have positive effects, and can be stressful at times. Ability to lift 40 pounds. Frequent standing, kneeling, stooping, and bending. Ability to move desk, classroom equipment and adaptive equipment.
