The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area(s) of health policy, health economics, behavioral economics, and/or health outcomes. Preference is for researcher interested in developing and evaluating population-level interventions. Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include include instructing and mentoring medical students, residents, clinical fellows, undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include establishing an innovative and independent research program that will attract and maintain extramural funding from government agencies, private foundations and industry.

The Health Policy Division has a broad array of faculty that research both domestic and global health policy with a wide range of topic areas including health services, physician and patient behavior change, economics of aging, anti-poverty policy, HIV policy, food policy, and other areas. Applicants early in career development are encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant for this position will:
(1) Demonstrate their ability to develop and maintain a high-impact research program including extramurally funded projects;
(2) Increase the Department’s instructional and research capacity in their area of focus;
(3) Contribute to the Department’s mission through serving on committees and collaborating with other faculty members, staff, students, partners, and community stakeholders.

This position is being funded in collaboration with the Health Care Transformation Institute, co-led by Drs. Ezekiel Emanuel and Amol Navathe. The Institute is dedicated to designing and evaluating interventions aimed at improving care quality, equity, and reducing costs. Key research projects currently involve, but are not limited to: bundled payments, equity-based payment, primary care capitation, physician feedback reporting, end of life care, and improving equity in risk adjustment. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate on and be the principal investigator on intervention studies as well as have their own research agenda. A key role will be cultivating collaborative projects with research partners. Experience with observational studies using statistical and/or econometric methods is necessary; additional experience with prospective studies in experimental economics or clinical trials is preferred. The successful candidate’s research interests will focus on health policy, health economics, behavioral economics, and/or health outcomes.

We are profoundly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who foster and share this commitment and who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. We strongly encourage candidates from groups that have been underrepresented in medicine and related fields due to discrimination and structural barriers, who have experienced socioeconomic disadvantage, or who have disabilities to apply.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
