This role is vital in bridging communication gaps between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, educators, and others in the school setting. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a deep understanding of the educational requirements of students with hearing impairments are essential for the ideal candidate.
American Sign Language Interpreters will:
Support students' needs as outlined in their IEPs.
Interpret extracurricular activities following school policies and supervisor directives.
Provide interpretation services for all mainstream classes attended by D/HH students.
Direct regular education staff inquiries regarding D/HH students to the designated case manager.
Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as an integral part of the team when required.
Act as a bridge between the D/HH Program and mainstream programs, ensuring smooth communication and collaboration.
Stay updated on educational interpreting practices through participation in workshops, professional gatherings, networking with peers, and staying informed about current literature in the field.
Requirements
EIPA score of 3.5 or higher.
Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL)
PEL endorsed in Educational Sign Language Interpretation.
