This role is vital in bridging communication gaps between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, educators, and others in the school setting. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a deep understanding of the educational requirements of students with hearing impairments are essential for the ideal candidate.
American Sign Language Interpreters will:
- Support students' needs as outlined in their IEPs.
- Interpret extracurricular activities following school policies and supervisor directives.
- Provide interpretation services for all mainstream classes attended by D/HH students.
- Direct regular education staff inquiries regarding D/HH students to the designated case manager.
- Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as an integral part of the team when required.
- Act as a bridge between the D/HH Program and mainstream programs, ensuring smooth communication and collaboration.
- Stay updated on educational interpreting practices through participation in workshops, professional gatherings, networking with peers, and staying informed about current literature in the field.
Requirements
- EIPA score of 3.5 or higher.
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL)
- PEL endorsed in Educational Sign Language Interpretation.
