Sidwell Friends School, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks a Part-time Head Coach for girls' Basketball at the Washington, D.C. campus. Leading with Sidwell Friends School (SFS) values, the Varsity girls' Basketball Coach reports to the Athletics Director and is responsible for initiating various aspects of the Basketball Program such as recruiting Sidwell athletes; scheduling opponents; training and coaching the Varsity team; training and coaching student-athletes at the middle school level (5-8th grade); participating in the selection and evaluation process for seasonal assistant coaches; participating in professional development activities that add value to their coaching performance; attending mandatory meetings, other training, and SFS community programming.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Represent Sidwell Friends and the girls' Basketball Program professionally in all aspects, including during the recruitment of Sidwell scholars, training, and coaching the members of the girls' BasketballProgram—model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Uphold a high standard of integrity in all aspects of team management that fosters a culture that promotes the School’s Quaker values and the student’s academic experience and intentionally integrates the School’s core values as the framework to coach and build athletic programs. A thoughtful approach and desire to constantly improve and innovative thinking are essential to the success of this role.

  • Coordinate the development and promotion of the girls' Basketball Program at the middle and upper school level. This will include coaching the 7th and 8th grade team as well as teaching 5th and 6th grade class rotations during basketball season.

  • Organize and schedule practice sessions; Strategize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercises; Assess players’ skills and assign team positions; and determine game strategy based on the team’s capabilities and follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury/emergency.

  • Perform other duties as assigned during non-competitive season (Fall/Spring) in Physical Education classes and/or as an assistant coach in a secondary sport. It is an expectation that for your middle school teaching duties as you will be involved in two other programs, therefore, knowledge in other sports is a plus.

  • Abide by SFS, Independent School League (ISL) and District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) rules and regulations.

  • Assemble competition schedule and overnight trips in accordance with the SFS, ISL, and DCSAA policies.

  • Plan, organize, and conduct a preseason meeting with all student-athletes and parents before the first official game.

  • Maintain inventory of all girls' Basketball equipment and uniforms.

  • Daily communication is a priority for this position to all stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree Required/ Master's preferred in the related field

  2. 1-3 years experience as an assistant or head Basketballcoach at the high school or collegiate levels

  3. Demonstrate effective coaching skills and techniques, and be knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and strategies.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.

  5. Available to work nights and weekends.

  6. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will complete and clear a background and fingerprint screening before the first day of work. Upon hire, they will obtain CPR Certification, First Aid training, Bus training (14 passenger), and other requirements immediately, upon hire.

Compensation

  • Stipend $3,852.00- $4,839.00 Stipend will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
