The Department of Atmospheric Sciences (ATMS) at the University of Washington (UW) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month (100% FTE), Teaching Assistant Professor faculty position. The initial appointment for this position spans three years, with the potential for renewal. This position is eligible for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. Teaching track positions at UW are not tenure-eligible. The proposed starting date of employment is September 16, 2024.

We anticipate that the successful candidate will lead the teaching of large introductory lecture courses in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, train and manage teaching assistants for those courses, and develop and advance the department’s curriculum in such courses. Teaching faculty also pursue scholarship in the area of atmospheric and climate science education, including but not limited, to best pedagogical practices and innovation, development of new courses or course materials, and participation in education research projects and/or outreach activities. 

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at UW is an internationally recognized leader in atmospheric and climate science research and education. The department resides in the College of the Environment, which fosters collaborations between the faculty, staff, and students engaged in the study of environmental sciences, engineering, and the human dimensions of environmental challenges. This position will offer opportunities for interaction with researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including ecology, biology, geology, glaciology, hydrology, oceanography, global health, economics, and environmental policy.

The base salary range for this position will be $8,500-$9,500 per month for a Teaching Assistant Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

This is a full-time (100% FTE), 9-month position, requiring a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Atmospheric Sciences or other closely related fields by the start of appointment.

• Teaching and Mentoring statement (3 pages). Please reflect on your teaching pedagogy and approaches to mentoring teaching assistants, provide evidence of teaching and mentoring effectiveness, and summarize how you envision engaging undergraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds through large lecture courses. Explain your approaches to both teaching and assessment in courses with > 100 students across different course modalities (in-person, synchronous online, asynchronous online, etc). 

• Scholarship Statement (2 pages). Please describe your plans for a program of scholarship that advances the effective teaching of climate science and other atmospherically relevant topics to students from a wide range of backgrounds.

• Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Statement (1 page). Please describe your goals and values with regards to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in large lecture courses, how your past and present work has contributed to a culture of DEIJ within your teaching, and how you will contribute to ATMS’s ongoing efforts to become an equitable, inclusive, and welcoming academic and professional environment
