Materials Engineer PURPOSE: Provides technical support related to materials necessary to meet engineering needs. Ensures that projects meet specifications, standards and performance requirements within area of expertise. ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS: • BS Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Engineering. 8+ years relevant experience in specialized area or product line(s). • Full understanding of metallurgical manufacturing, melting, forging and heat-treating processes. • Expert knowledge of metal forming techniques, specifically open and closed die forging. • Good organization and project planning skills. Demonstrates proficiency in thinking creatively, project planning and task completion. • Experienced in executing variations in customer, code or contract compliance and the alternative solutions. Participate and review contract terms and standards, and technical terms and conditions. • Ability to identify and make recommendations for system improvements. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: • Houston Operating Procedures & START Safety Program (or equivalent in Dunfermline); TeamCenter Engineering Systems. • Takes required ABC Corp. training courses as outlined in the Engineering Training Assessment Plan. RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: • Direct Reports - None, but often leads one or more professionals or technicians on a project basis. • Consults with other local & global resources as required. • Participates as a fully contributing member of a project team. Often leads root cause analysis for solving of problems. • Develops strong relationships with customer technical or service personnel. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY: • No budget responsibility at this level. • Subject Matter Expert on Forging Process for Ferrous and Non Ferrous Alloys • Interprets and applies relevant policies & procedures. • Receives direction from manager to set broad objectives, interpret policy issues, develop new concepts & resolve unusual problems. • Analyzes and interprets data independently with limited oversight. Anticipates potential problems and implements preventative action. • Utilizes available technical resources throughout ABC Corp. & outside institutions. • Actively participation in industry groups and organizations • Working with a global team to set/enforce requirements for supplier technical audits and qualifications, approving of suppliers to provide forgings for ABC Corp. worldwide. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office and manufacturing environment. Exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in ABC Corp. facilities and supplier facilities. International travel required, 25-50% of the time. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Spends 60% of time sitting and operating a computer or workstation. Spends 40% of time lifting, pushing, and walking. Some climbing. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS: For each duty, identify if it is an E - essential function or N - nonessential function of the job. E/N Duties and Responsibilities E Performing external audits and qualifying new suppliers and evaluation of existing suppliers of forgings to ABC Corp. E Performs detailed technical evaluation of global forge suppliers to determine technical proficiency of supplier and conformance to ABC Corp. requirements. Forging suppliers may be small closed die forgings or large (25,000 lb) open die forgings. Shall also evaluate melting sources that provide forging stock (ingot or billet) and heat treat facilities for achievement of final mechanical properties. E Reviews and approves detailed forging plans of suppliers for product quality and conformance. Works with suppliers to agree on manufacturing plans to meet ABC Corp requirements. E Prepares documentation, information and communications such as ECN (Engineering Change Notices), audit reports, engineering reports and engineering specifications Ensures conformance to all policies and procedures related to engineering functions, labor reporting and systems reporting. E Develops solutions to non-recurring problems by analyzing, interpreting and evaluating various precedents and data. Anticipates potential problems and initiates preventative actions. E Consults with other departments on equipment designs and questions. Identifies root cause of problems. Implements alternative solutions and communicates associated benefits and risks. E Supports customer projects by providing materials selection and processing advice. E Provides metallurgical advice and support to Engineering. E Supports customer interface on material problems and recommendations. E Assists Purchasing department in obtaining supplier material and process quality. E Participates in product standardization projects. E Attends appropriate industry related professional society meetings and functions in order to stay informed of and make good use of new technology, products and personal development opportunities.
