General Summary

The Engineering Rotational Development Program (ERDP) participants will be key players in executing the GTI Energy Roadmap in solving global energy challenges by innovating and developing new capabilities driven by market demand. GTI Energy is seeking recent top-performing undergraduates in both Mechanical and Chemical Engineering for this full-time, permanent, engineering role which will begin with a select, 2-year, engaging, high-visibility, Rotational Program that will prepare the selected candidates with in-depth, hands-on experience across a broad range of energy technology development and implementation activities.

This role will rotate in approximately 6-month intervals through 5 different and technical R&D departments including: Research & Engineering, Engineering Operations, Low Carbon Energy Solutions, Digital Innovation, and Zero Emissions Systems. Each group has unique responsibilities and requirements with a shared goal for each to bring innovative, high-quality products to market quickly and reliably. The engineers selected will work closely with cross functional teams assigned to each product development project, leveraging the knowledge of all specialties within Chemical and Mechanical Engineering. After successfully completing the Engineering Rotational Engineering Program (ERDP), participants will then choose a specific area of interest at GTI Energy into which they will be promoted to further their engineering career.

Why GTI Energy?

GTI Energy offers generous benefits, competitive salaries, career advancement, and the opportunity to work in a professional R&D environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

We are proud of what we do because our work matters. GTI Energy is working toward solving global energy challenges in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. We have a proven track record in producing innovative ideas and commercializing solutions to deliver clean and reliable energy. At GTI Energy, we deliver innovative technology solutions for safe, efficient, and responsible energy.

So, what does that mean for you? You will work in a positive and respectful work culture that fosters growth, collaboration, and opportunity. You will be supported by competitive compensation, incentives, and benefits, while enjoying purposeful work that drives improvement of delivering clean energy to the world.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. While local candidates are preferred, GTI Energy does provide relocation assistance for the right candidate.

Primary Responsibilities

General roles include helping project managers (PMs) and principal investigators (PIs) manage technology and product development initiatives, including laboratory experimental and field demonstration research, managing project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and other project-specific needs. There will be other duties to perform as assigned. Below is an overview of the departments that our Engineering Rotational Development Program will support on a 6-month rotational basis.

Research & Engineering
  • Building Energy Efficiency – Conducting research on residential and light commercial appliances for water heating, space heating, space cooling and onsite power generation/distributed generation and building energy modeling and analysis of greenhouse gas reduction pathways.
  • Energy Delivery Systems – Conducting research on gaseous pipeline energy delivery systems to improve reliability and safety and addressing application to new energy resources.
  • Industrial & Power Generation – Conducting research on large commercial & industrial applications for waste heat recovery, combustion, heat transfer, and boiler application.
  • Process Engineering – Developing process models in Aspen or similar software, draft process flow diagrams, piping and instrument diagram, size equipment, estimate project costs, and perform hazard analysis on novel GTI technologies or customer technologies. The process engineer will also periodically support the proposal writing process.
    • This role will focus on the design, development, and implementation of chemical and energy system processes to advance new process technologies.
    • The functions of this role may involve process design and analysis, capital, and operating cost estimation, detailed chemical kinetics, and test data analysis/model validation.
  • Energy Conversion Project Engineering – Participate and support Project/Program management development activities from project conception through execution.
    • Support technical proposal writing and technology development planning for advanced chemical and conversion processes.
    • This role will focus on providing project engineering support to Project and Program Managers in executing projects in the fields of Gasification, Bio-Energy, Gas Separations/CO2 Capture, Hydrogen Generation, and Power Conversion, including planning/managing laboratory experimental and field demonstration project technical deliverables, budgets, and schedules.
Engineering Operations
  • Laboratory and Pilot Test Operations – Support the conduct of research to advance energy conversion technologies from laboratory to pilot scale. Participate in the design, assembly, operation, and maintenance of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale test facilities. Support documenting as well as analysis and interpretation of test results and experimental data. Assist in development of research projects in the areas of innovative energy and environmental technologies. This role will include supporting the evaluation and testing of low carbon bio-energy conversion, reforming combustion, gasification, and membrane separation systems, components with high heat flux heat exchange, fluidized beds, particulate solids transport, and membrane separation, in addition to test article design and fabrication.
Low Carbon Energy Solutions
  • Infrastructure – Assessing the impacts of low/no carbon fuels such as hydrogen on existing and new energy delivery infrastructure components and operations.
  • Heat & Power – Evaluating the performance and benefits of the use of hydrogen and other alternative energy sources for producing power and generating heat in a low carbon future.
  • Clean Mobility – Research projects focused on alternative transportation fuels, specifically related to CNG, hydrogen, fuel cell vehicles, electric vehicles and fueling stations as well as RNG production and utilization.

Digital Innovation & Strategy – support ongoing research programs with the standards and best practices in data management, software development, system infrastructure design, and tools development that enable adoption of our internal research programs. This team is also building new, innovative, digitally-focused opportunities that accelerate decarbonization pathways and provide foundational data to the industry that is required to make better decisions.

Zero Emissions Systems Team (ZEST) – ZEST seeks to demonstrate scalable solutions that accelerate and increase the effectiveness of operational efforts to reduce methane emissions from natural gas systems this decade. Two objectives underpin the business strategy for the Zero Emissions Systems Team and are in service of GTI Energy’s mission to deliver impactful innovations needed for low-carbon, low-cost energy systems worldwide:

  • Reducing emissions across existing energy systems with a focus on reducing methane leaks.
  • Evolving our energy systems of today to accelerate the transition to a Net Zero economy by 2050.
