The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

The next Division Chief will lead one of the largest and most successful pediatric gastroenterology programs in the nation and will be expected to participate in patient care, teaching, and scholarship.  The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition is comprised of over 60 faculty with diverse clinical, educational, and investigative interests, as well as 21 Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition fellows and over 300 staff members.

Teaching responsibilities may include teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and APPs. The Division has responsibilities for training large numbers of medical students, residents, and fellows. Educating the next generation of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition leaders is a priority of the Division, which holds an NIH T32 training grant in addition to dedicated and endowed training funds.

Clinical responsibilities may include inpatient or outpatient services at CHOP’s Main campus and other sites.  The Division leads multiple robust outpatient clinical programs, including over 30 dedicated multispecialty and disease focused programs, providing care in over 54,000 patient outpatient encounters per year. Multispecialty programs within the Division include leaders in pediatrics, nursing, nutrition, psychology, and social work who are frequently partnered with leaders in associated research fields.

The Division has a strong inpatient presence, which consists of a large teaching service at the Main CHOP Hospital Campus in Philadelphia and a consultative service at the new CHOP community-based hospital in King of Prussia. Numerous inpatient attendings provide primary and consultative care for over 17,000 inpatient encounters per year.  Attendings perform over 9,000 procedures of all types per year.

The successful applicant will have a strong track record of scholarship and research.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include contributions to the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and/or nutrition.  The Division encompasses a well-funded research enterprise, including basic science, translational, clinical and health services research programs and spanning all areas of the field.   Areas of research focus include the microbiome, inflammatory bowel diseases (including VEO-IBD), eosinophilic esophagitis, epithelial biology, motility and neurogastroenterology, hepatology and liver transplant, pancreatology, intestinal rehabilitation, pediatric nutrition and bone health, obesity, and others.  The next Division Chief will lead a large group of investigators, supporting their research endeavors through advocacy, mentorship, and development of philanthropic partnerships.

The Division Chief reports to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and works closely with the other Division Chiefs, the Associate Chairs, and the Vice Chair in the Department of Pediatrics.

The Division Chief will oversee the clinical, research, and educational activities of the Division, lead recruiting efforts in the Division, and ensure career mentoring for all faculty and fellows in the Division.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are EOEs. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.

Inquiries about the position should be sent to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Angela Ellison at ellisona@chop.edu
