Responsibilities

  • Perform personal care needs
  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals and assist in feeding the patient when necessary
  • Take and record temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure when ordered with appropriate completed/demonstrated skills competency when on patients plan of care
  • Assist in ambulation and exercise, as instructed
  • Assist patient in self-administration of medication
  • Meet safety needs of patient and use equipment safely and properly
  • Report on patient’s condition and significant changes to the assigned nurse
  • Keep the patient’s living area clean and orderly
  • Provide respite for patient’s family/caregiver when on-site, as appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal legal and regulatory requirements
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Meets the training requirements of the State
  • Completed a minimum of seventy five hours of classroom and supervised practical training Sixteen hours of classroom must be completed prior to a mandatory sixteen hours of practical training
  • Minimum of six months experience including providing personal care
  • At least eighteen years of age
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care given
  • Understands hospice philosophy, comfortable providing specialized care to the terminally ill
  • Satisfactory references from previous employers
  • Ability to work with little direct supervision
  • Secure with issues of death/dying
  • Provides a calm manner when in a patient’s home
  • Possess and maintains current CPR certification
  • Demonstrates tact, patience, and good personal hygiene
  • Successfully completes a probationary period
    • This probationary period is to ensure the aide is competent in the above qualifications and is documented by the supervisor and the employee
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
