KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of 18 free, public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. We partner with families and communities to create joyful and rigorous schools in pursuit of a more just world. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in the Bronx, with a vision that every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. Today, our network consists of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive program to support our students and alumni in choosing and preparing for the educational and career paths that fit their goals and sense of purpose. Position Overview
The Director of Science, Technology, Engineering (STE) role is an essential position that will lead the vision for high-quality science education at KIPP NYC’s schools. The Director of STE role will report directly to the Senior Director of STE and work closely with the regional Teaching and Learning Support Team (TLS) as well as School Leaders, Deans, and teachers to ensure the effective implementation of our KIPP NYC STE program.
This role is based in NYC and may require travel to our schools. Cadence and frequency of travel to schools is determined by your leadership team. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.
General Duties and Responsibilities (but are not limited to):
Curriculum Design and Management
- Develop and oversee elementary school STE initiatives, using student and teacher performance data to align STE instruction with KIPP NYC’s vision of exemplary teaching.
- Lead and coordinate large-scale curricular development projects, engaging teacher leaders in the process.
- Utilize deep understanding of STE content and effective instructional practices to design, revise, and evaluate STE curriculum documents, focusing on enhancing the quality of instruction and user experience with KIPP NYC’s Amplify Science, Engineering, Computational Thinking, Computer Science and other STE curricula.
Assessment Design and Data Systems
- Develop and design a cohesive summative and formative assessment strategy that accurately measures key knowledge and skills across a K-12 Science Progression
- Collaborate with the Data and Assessment Team to create and manage a system for sharing assessment data results and analyses to the greater KIPP NYC teacher and leader community
- Design, and implement support for 5th and 8th grade state science assessments through data driven practices
- Create and manage system for sharing assessment data results and data trends with the KIPP NYC teacher and leader community
School Support
- Observe instructional practices in schools with a specific lens towards high priority and/or new ES/ MS STE initiatives to evaluate changes and determine next steps for teacher and leader support
- Support school-based leaders in continually evaluating the effectiveness of the STE program overall based on our existing data systems
Professional Development
- Provide targeted coaching and professional development experiences to principals and deans to support content knowledge development and curriculum implementation and innovation
- Develop and facilitate regional professional development for teachers and leaders to ensure full implementation of curriculum and instructional initiatives in KIPP NYC’s STE program
Compensation and Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary for this role ranging from $115,000 to $132,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band.
