Founded in 1890, Glen-Gery Corporation is one of the nation’s largest brick manufacturers and operates ten brick manufacturing facilities and one manufactured stone facility. Glen-Gery products are sold nationally through a network of over 500 distributors as well as in Canada.
Basic Function
The Management Accountant role will be a hybrid position, having responsibility for the overall accounting function for multiple plants, under supervision of the Regional Plant Controller. These responsibilities include month-end closing, variance reporting/analysis, standard cost creation and maintenance, and assist with weekly profit estimates and annual budgets.
Responsibilities:
- Assist Regional Plant Controller with annual budgets and forecast preparation
- Create and maintain standard costs used in production and assist management with periodic reviews of product cost component accuracy and consistency as well as over/under absorption of actual costs
- In coordination with the Distribution team, manage material for the site including vendor payments and inventory management.
- Month end closing:
- Review and analyze monthly physical inventory variance and identify trends and root cause analysis of variances
- Preparation and posting of various accruals and other journal entries as required in compliance of IFRS accounting standards
- Review of expense accounts ensuring accuracy and provide detail of variances and high impact items to Regional Controller
- Reconciliation and review of balance sheet accounts ensuring accurate representation of current assets and liabilities
- Maintain cost center distribution matrix to allocate proper costs (i.e. labor) to respective departments
- Provide business support and analysis to plant and senior management:
- Conduct production scrap analysis by product to identify trends in scrap rate
- Execute monthly inventory aging analysis to identify inventory turns by product, slow and no moving stock, and corresponding trends associated with inventory by various product groups
- Track, report and comment on organizational KPI’s weekly and monthly
- Review and report on monthly manufacturing costs by department to plant management and identify potential costs savings areas
- Review production cost variances compared to standard costs and report findings and present possible remediate actions
- Support Plant Manager and Regional Plant Controller in preparation of weekly profit estimates:
- Provide month to date profit statement transparency
- Identify future expenses by analyzing open PO’s, labor forecast, trends, and communicate one- time impacts
- Compare weekly estimate to actuals and identify causes and trends for continuous improvement in forecast accuracy
- Ensure compliance with key controls and policies at all times
- Provide ad-hoc support to the Regional Plant Controller as may be required
- Travel to plants quarterly to work with Plant team for collaboration, educational purposes, and to participate in stocktakes
Education and experience requirements
- BS/BA Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Relevant experience (1-3 years) in a manufacturing environment
- Well-developed analytical skills and experience in forecasting, budget preparation, and variance reporting preferred
- Proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Experience with a larger ERP solution such as JD Edwards
- Must be willing to travel locally as necessary to assist Regional Controller. Providing support to the plant managers, attend physical inventory counts, and review controls
