PAY RANGE
$195,000 – $255,000 Annual Salary - Pay based on applicable experience and qualifications
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Vice President-Controller has primary responsibility for the management of the organization’s accounting department, including all aspects of corporate, development, property, resident services, and treasury functions. As the day-to-day operations leader for the accounting department, this position is responsible for implementing new accounting standards and procedures, ensuring compliance with existing accounting and agency regulations, instituting internal controls to minimize risks as well as the preparation of financial reports for annual audits, tax compliance, management, regulatory agencies, and the Board of Directors. The Vice President-Controller will coordinate the accounting activities with departments across the organization and ensure that all financial transactions / information / reports, policies, and procedures are in accordance with US GAAP standards and are accurately and timely submitted to management and regulatory agencies as required.
Success in the role will be measured by consistent high-quality delivery of the job duties, successful mentoring of the accounting team, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to positively influence and interact at all levels of the organization within the framework of the MidPen mission and core values.
This is a hybrid position, based on current MidPen policy of working Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Foster City Office. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, option to work from home or the office. When working from home, requires a reliable internet connection.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Directs the activities concerned with safekeeping, control, and accounting for assets and securities
- Directs and coordinates the organization’s financial affairs according to financial principles and regulations
- Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems
- Ensures compliance with appropriate US GAAP, regulatory requirements and MidPen standards, including compliance with financial reporting requirements of all regulatory and partnership agreements
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures of financial recordkeeping and reporting
- Maintains accounting internal control and safeguards, including all balance sheet and income statement accounts and records
- Directs the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and consolidated financial accounting close processes
- Maintains inter-entity reconciliation and all processes of financial recordkeeping to ensure compliance with accounting and control systems
- Reviews all financial plans and compares to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
- Leads all audit and tax preparation activity and manages relationship with MidPen auditors and outsource vendors
- Supports the CFO in engaging the Board and related committees (Audit, Finance) regarding annual audit and tax results, and quarterly financial results
- Oversees the treasury and cash reporting functions
- Supervises and tracks the performance of invested assets and ensures adherence with policies and investment guidelines
- Administers all aspects of new accounting technology implementation
- Manages, mentors, and develops a high performing professional accounting team
- Leverages strengths of the current accounting team members, clarify roles and responsibilities, and restructure as necessary for organizational best performance and support
- Develops and implements training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals and MidPen core values
- Provides leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in accounting from an accredited university and 10 years of progressive accounting responsibility or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Significant accounting leadership experience as a Controller or Senior Accounting Officer
- Experience within affordable housing/real estate industry preferred
- Certified Public Accounting (CPA) certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, and communication skills
- Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management
- Advanced knowledge Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word
- Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload, and providing direction/corrections as necessary
- Must have the ability to select, motivate, retain, coach, and develop a high-performing team
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License, proof of current auto insurance, and reliable transportation
