Job Description

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for delivering instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role requires adaptability, effective communication, and a commitment to maintaining a positive educational environment.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction and Delivery

  • Implement lesson plans that the absent teacher provides or create appropriate instructional plans when necessary.
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies to engage students in learning activities.​

Classroom Management and Supervision

  • Maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Implement effective classroom management techniques to promote student engagement and discipline.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, and recess as assigned.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times.

Communication and Professional Conduct

  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Provide feedback to the regular classroom teacher regarding student performance and behavior.​
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, and parents.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information per school policies and legal requirements.

Other Responsibilities (As Needed)
This description outlines the position's primary duties; however, substitute teachers may be required to perform other job-related tasks as directed by their supervisor or the School Principal to ensure smooth school operations.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent for short-term assignments required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: Prior teaching or substitute experience preferred.

  • Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and child maltreatment registry checks.
  • Ongoing participation in professional development activities as required by ADE.
  • Strong knowledge in core academic subjects; proficiency in integrating technology into instruction.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.

Additional Information

Substitute teacher wages will be based on experience and within the SY 2025-26 Salary Schedule range.
