The mission of Justice at Work (formerly Friends of Farmworkers) is to support low wage workers as they pursue economic and social justice. We provide direct legal services for claims arising out of employment to workers throughout Pennsylvania and also to organizations whose members are client-eligible workers and their families. Many of our clients are migrant and immigrant workers. Our clients work in a variety of industries, such as agriculture, food processing, and landscaping. In addition to direct legal services, Justice at Work engages in outreach, education, and advocacy.
Our areas of focus include: wage theft; employment discrimination; labor trafficking; occupational health and safety; and, concerted protected activity. We have specialized programs to assist survivors of labor trafficking, women in the low-wage workforce, and victims of notario fraud. We have a medical legal partnership with Puentes de Salud medical clinic in Philadelphia. We also represent many workers present in the U.S. on non-immigrant visas.
The Fellow will assist with client communication, research, and writing. There will also be exposure to litigation, advocacy, outreach, and client education. Projects for the Pittsburgh-based PBF Summer Fellow may also include assisting with our community education and outreach to farm labor camps (if public health conditions permit), community groups, and schools with students whose families do farm work; completing presentations about our services at local organizations; and participating in local and state-level advocacy.
Students with strong written and spoken Spanish language skills and demonstrated interest in low-income communities are encouraged to apply. Candidates with other language skills will also be considered. The Peggy Browning Fellow will assist on individual cases that include a great deal of client contact. There will be exposure to public advocacy, outreach and client education. Justice at Work anticipates that staff members, interns, and volunteers will be working on a hybrid in-person/ in-office basis by the summer of 2023.
The total ten-week stipend for this fellowship will be $7,000.
