Job Description
The Emergency Department Tech-Palos reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Emergency Department Tech’s (EDT) primary function is to assist and support the Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities. The Emergency Department Tech (EDT) functions as a member of the unit staff under the direction and supervision of the professional Registered Nurse and ED Physician.
Responsibilities:
Provides wound care
Assists with splinting and orthopedic devices
Performs ECGs
Performs phlebotomy in addition to specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum)
Labels and processes specimens according to established protocols and policies
Performs bedside waived testing procedures and maintains annual competency
Prepares patient and room for MD or RN assessment, evaluation, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (work may require lifting and positioning of patients)
Obtains vital signs and routinely reassess vital signs
Applies cardiac monitor/pulse oximetry
Collects and records intake and output
Administers and assists with direct patient care and patient hygiene activities
Makes rounds of patients and anticipates their needs
Promptly answers patient’s call lights
Applies comfort and safety measures
Transports and/or retrieves patients, specimens, equipment and/or supply as needed
Documents on medical record all patient care provided
Performs CPR
Performs morgue care
Skills that are not approved for this position regardless if individual certification or licensure present:
IV initiation
Medication administration including code drugs
Intubation
Tracheal suctioning
Completes all necessary duties to ensure a clean, safe, attractive work environment
Cleans, organizes, and prepares patient rooms; notifies appropriate personnel for mopping, garbage disposal
Maintains stock of patient care items according to standards, orders accordingly in EPIC
Cleans and prepares for processing of equipment requiring sterilization
This position is full-time, 72 hours per pay period, mid shift, 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. with alternating weekends and holidays.
Qualifications
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent
Previous patient care experience
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
CPR Certification from the American Heart Association
Preferred:
Certified Nurse Assistant or EMT-B certification
Phlebotomy and ECG skills
College degree or interest in health care field
Strong customer service orientation
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
