Design Drafter Team Lead

Primary Objective of Position:

The Design Drafter Team Leader is responsible for providing daily guidance and knowledge to the Mechanical Design Drafters. This position is responsible for collaboration and sharing of best Design Drafting practices within the WEG Company.

Major Areas of Accountability:

  • Oversees and provides guidance to the Product Engineering department for all projects.
  • Responsible for several stages of the customer order: Sales, Design, Manufacturing, Assembly, and Field Services. Partners closely with production support, Aftermarket Engineering, and Quality to assure minimum cost and defect-free machines, and identifies preventative action measures as needed.
  • Identifying opportunities for proactive initiatives thru standardized design models, software automation, and consistency between designs.
  • Diagnosing problems within the Engineering software to increase productivity.
  • Developing, coordinating, and enforcing engineering systems and calculations, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Accountable for process improvements, reducing manufacturing costs, and enhancing product quality.
  • Proactively develops the company’s products and mechanical design-related processes.
  • Creates project plans for product development consistent with overall company strategic plan.
  • Provides technical support to other departments resolving technical issues to meet special customer requirements, and makes technical decisions based on sound engineering practice.
  • Writes specifications; including work instructions, design standards, and project reports.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • BS degree preferred in technical field; experience drafting, electric motors and/or generators preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the design or development of large motors and/or generators, or equal level of product complexity.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using SAP required.
  • Knowledge of documentation requirements of ISO 9001 required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Self-starting, results-oriented, flexible, team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, evaluate, and solve complex issues of technical content with guidance and technical support.
  • Demonstrated experience completing project schedules on time.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to lead and interact with teams to obtain consensus.
  • Ability to work well within a team, as well as independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to travel worldwide on short notice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally ascend/descend scaffolding, ladders or several flights of stairs.
  • Ability to occasionally lifts and move 25 pounds.
