Biomedical Engineer Specialist - San Juan Capistrano, CA - Monday-Friday (Rotational Saturday)

Pay Range: $73,150 - $131,800 / year


Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful
candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

To ensure 24 hr/7 day a week operation of the 3 lines of business of the Kansas BU including employer solutions, insurance and clinical testing. The Kansas BU provides laboratory results for three lines of business—Employer Solutions (24 hour testing window), insurance (18 hour testing window) and clinical (24 hour testing window). Much of the equipment is used 24 hours/day. The biomedical specialist is responsible for the proper operation, repair, and preventive maintenance carried out on all assigned equipment in the laboratory, ensuring a 24hr/7 day a week operation.  Specifically, the specialist provides immediate on-site service for continuous instrument operation. The specialist must have a high level of expertise in repairing and extensive knowledge of the specific equipment needing support, specifically Olympus 5200 and 5400 analyzers, hematology automated lines, GCMS, and other similarly highly complex instrumentation.  Additional duties include, but are not limited to, the calibration of equipment, training junior BMET’s, inventory control, documentation of all service and on-call coverage. 

The biomedical specialist works independently, set priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.  The biomedical specialist solves equipment problems quickly and efficiently using all resources available including personal knowledge and expertise, on the job training, vendor advanced training and technical manuals.  The biomedical specialist must have formal training in electronics or biomedical engineering, be able to read schematics and understand, interpret and implement instructions from technical manuals. 

The biomedical specialist must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be expected to keep bench supervisors and lab management informed of his/her appraisal of equipment needs and impact on daily production, including time limits for completion. Proper operation of equipment is essential to the achievement of Quest Diagnostic’s production and operational goals. 


  • The Biomedical Specialist is responsible for the operation, calibration, preventive maintenance and repair of all equipment in the laboratory. The Biomedical Specialist will: 
    • Ensure instrumentation is up and functioning at all times to achieve production goals. In the Kansas BU this includes all 3 businesses. 
    • Work closely with Biomedical Management coordinating departmental priorities, budgeting, setting goals and evaluating progress toward achieving department objectives. 
    • Determine priority of equipment repair or maintenance. 
    • Requisition all parts and materials as necessary in a cost efficient manner. 
    • Train junior BMET’s on higher echelon repairs. 
    • Understand and assist in the proper operation of the facility DI water system. 
  • Complexity and Size:  
    • 24 Olympus analyzers, including (15) 5400s, (5) 5200s and (4) 640s. 
    • The 5200s are no longer supportes by Olympus. The Biomedical Specialist must maintain the operation of these instruments through canabolizing parts from out of service instruments. 
    • Support equipment needs for 60,000 reqs/nt for the 3 businesses.  
  • Record Keeping - The Biomedical Specialist will maintain accurate and detailed records on all laboratory instrumentation to include service/repair reports, calibrations, preventive maintenance and current operational status of equipment. 
  • The Biomedical Specialist will submit status reports to the Biomedical Supervisor on a regular schedule, as requested by the Biomedical Manager.  
  • Safety - The Biomedical Specialist will adhere to all company and accepted industry electrical, electronic and biological safety procedures while performing job duties. 
  • Vendors - The Biomedical Specialist will coordinate shipment of vendor parts and act as a liaison to other service engineers or reps. Work with the vendors to attend all advanced Biomedical training courses. 
  • Interpersonal Skills/Communication - The Biomedical Specialist is expected to: 
  • Interact professionally and courteously with all levels of laboratory personnel when servicing and/or maintaining equipment. 
  • Inform Managers/Supervisors of equipment needs, impact on daily production and time parameters for completion of repair/service. 
  • Attendance and Punctuality - This position requires prompt and regular daily attendance as well as being on call at all times.  
  • The Biomedical Specialist must be able to work independently, establish priorities and manage multiple projects. 
  • The incumbent will complete all job expectations as outlined by the biomedical manager.  This will be incorporated in the regular performance appraisal as they are reviewed. 
  • The Biomedical Specialist will respond to the needs and requests of clients and Quest Diagnostics management and staff in a professional and expedient manner. The Biomedical Specialist is expected to observe all compliance policies and safety policies and procedures, as directed by Quest Diagnostics, Inc. or safety matters included in other special training 

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Work Experience:  

Minimum eight years of proven successful service experience on complex laboratory or hospital instrumentation. 

Knowledge:  

Extensive knowledge of chemistry, hematology, GCMS, or similar instrumentation. 

Skills:  

  • Excellent problem solving skills, independent thinker 
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills. 


EDUCATION
Associates Degree(Required)

Physical and Mental Requirements:  

  • Manual dexterity adequate to handle small tools requiring intricate manipulations of small pieces in confined areas. 
  • Must be able to differentiate between color coded wires and interpret visual readouts.  Must pass color blindness screening.  
  • Must be able to react to auditory warnings and messages. 
  • Will be required to lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Will require prolonged period of standings in addition to bending, stooping, reaching & squatting.
