Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications & Degree Requirements

A High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. A minimum of 2 years experience in a custodial position with general knowledge of cleaning processes, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, carpet cleaning, floor stripping, buffing, etc. is preferred.  Experience using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning solutions is preferred.  Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals is preferred. 

Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours.  Ability to perform repetitive motion for long periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of custodial equipment.  Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform custodial duties. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. The position will involve pushing and pulling the cleaning cart.  It will also involve bending, stopping, reaching, kneeling, and working with chemicals and conditions of indoor and outdoor weather environments.

Position Description

This position is responsible for the day-to-day cleanliness of classrooms, offices, restrooms, and hallways, etc.  In addition, he/she serves on various teams/committees to enhance services provided by all divisions.  Duties will include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning windows, cleaning restrooms, shampooing carpets, sealing floors, collecting trash, restocking custodial supplies, assisting other custodial personnel and assisting with event set-ups, etc.   

Essential Responsibilities

The Custodian is responsible for the general upkeep of all assigned areas. In this role, he/she will:

  • Sweep/mop tile floors daily.
  • General cleaning of classrooms, offices, and restrooms daily.
  • Clean all interior glass windows on an “as needed” basis.
  • Clean all glass doors (more often if needed) daily.
  • Clean/vacuum carpeted areas as needed.
  • Assist with event set-ups and break-downs.
  • Clean tables/chairs in preparation for special events.
  • Assist coworkers as needed.
  • May be required to unlock or lock the building.
  • Other duties as directed by the Director of Facilities

The Custodian must

  • Possess a positive attitude toward all assigned tasks.
  • Keep all assigned areas as clean as possible and presentable.
  • Willing to assist other custodial personnel in the performance of certain tasks and fill in when they are absent.
  • Must be reliable and able to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Must be able to work the afternoon/evening shift between 3 pm - 8:30 pm, with a 30-minute dinner break.
