Hiring Requirement: This position requires the individual to be a certified journeyman for Tool and Die Making.

General Responsibilities:

Keeps machinery and mechanical equipment in a state of good repair.  When breakdowns occur, must be able to determine the cause of failure and make necessary repairs.  Examines machines for defects in operation.  Completely or partially dismantles machine to gain access to defective parts.  Use various hand and power tools necessary for the job.  Repairs parts, obtains new, or makes replacement parts, then reassembles machine and makes necessary mechanical adjustments to insure efficient operation.

Installs, moves, and repairs machinery, machine tools, and other mechanical equipment in the plant.  Determines correct location and method of securing – assures proper alignment and operation of the machinery once in place. 

  1. Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment -- Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles.
  2. Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material -- Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  3. Getting Information -- Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  4. Making Decisions and Solving Problems -- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  5. Handling and Moving Objects -- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
  6. Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment -- Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts.
  7. Performing General Physical Activities -- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  8. Communicating with Supervisors and Peers -- Providing information to supervisors and co-workers by telephone, in written form, or in person.
  9. Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards -- Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  10. Find Creative Solutions -- Developing, designing, or creating new devises or applications to solve equipment related problems when clear solutions are not evident.
  11. Updating and Using Relevant Knowledge -- Keeping up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge to your job.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to read, follow and understand engineering specifications and prints in maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • Aligns machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, etc. as needed.
  • Connects power to machines or equipment and tests unit to evaluate its mechanical operation.
  • Observes and tests the operation of machinery and equipment in order to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Analyze test results, machine error messages, and information obtained from operators in order to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Examines parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear.
  • Replaces defective parts of machine or adjusts clearances and alignment of moving parts.
  • Reassembles equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Records repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Clean, lubricate, and adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.
  • Welds various plant items, structural steel, jigs, machinery, machine tools, etc. Must perform welds on a variety of metals and their alloys, and have the ability to do brazing, straightening and normalizing.
  • Positions steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures.
  • Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
  • Moves machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.
  • Attaches moving parts and subassemblies to basic assembly unit, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Assembles machines, and bolt, weld, rivet, or otherwise fasten them to foundation or other structures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Bolt parts, such as side and deck plates, jaw plates, and journals, to basic assembly unit.
  • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.
  • Dismantles machinery and equipment for shipment to installation site, usually performing installation and maintenance work as part of team.
  • Constructs foundation for machines, using hand tools and building materials such as wood, cement, and steel.
  • Installs robots and confirm mechanical operation.
  • Operates engine lathe to grind, file, and turn machine parts to dimensional specifications.
