Job Type Intern

Apply Now

New York City, NY

This is the 2024 Fellowship listing for this mentor organization. This position has been filled.

The New York State Nurses Association (“NYSNA”) is a labor organization of over 40,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. NYSNA is New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

NYSNA’s Legal Department provides representation and advice to NYSNA in a variety of matters in both the public and private sector context. The Legal Intern will be asked to perform legal research, draft legal memoranda, and work closely with in-house counsel on pending legal actions which include but are not limited to: labor arbitrations and unfair labor practice/improper practice proceedings. Interns will also attend meetings with union leaders to gain experience with the various types of roles that in-house counsel performs for NYSNA.

NYSNA is interested in applicants with a demonstrated interest in social justice, racial justice and workers’ rights. The successful applicant will possess excellent writing and research skills. Completion of a basic labor law course is preferred but not required. All applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school.

The selected applicant would be expected to work during regular office hours (9am-5pm) from Monday through Friday. The selected applicant’s work location would parallel the requirements of the Legal Department and as such it would involve a substantial amount of in-person work. The duration of the internship shall range between eight (8) to ten (10) weeks with a compensation rate of $30.00 per hour.

NYSNA takes the health of its employees, families, members’ and communities very seriously. Accordingly, the intern will be expected to adhere to any and all NYSNA promulgated COVID Protocols that may be in effect during the internship period.

Note: Every effort has been made to make this internship description as complete and comprehensive as possible. However, it in no way states or implies that these are the only duties required of the internship. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the internship if the work is similar, related, or is a logical assignment within the internship.

Law Students seeking to apply for the internship, should include a cover letter, current resume, two legal writing samples, and two professional references. Apply using the PBF Form below.

NYSNA is committed to fostering an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion. Women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are strongly encouraged to apply.
