We are seeking an energetic new team member with a passion for developing, evaluating, and demonstrating new energy efficiency, decarbonization, and grid-flexibility technologies in buildings. Responsibilities for this position may encompass developing, conducting, and managing energy efficiency projects, and communicating results to a diverse audience. Depending on the applicant’s skills, work will focus on one or more of the following technical areas:
- Planning innovative research, demonstration, and deployment projects
- Field testing of system performance in homes and/or commercial/institutional buildings.
- Analyzing performance data collected in the field or lab in support of research projects,
- Performing or overseeing building energy modeling activities,
- Applying technical analysis to support energy efficiency policies and programs, and
The candidate will organize and manage project activities; design and participate in research and demonstration activities; and prepare technical reports for clients and stakeholders. Depending on qualifications, the candidate may identify new strategic areas of research and funding opportunities and develop proposals for new work. The candidate may have eventually have supervisory responsibilities including hiring, assigning work, performance reviews and mentoring, and will provide highly effective technical leadership. The candidate will nurture collaborative working relationships with a range of stakeholders including clients, subcontractors, research partners, and the broader energy efficiency and building science technical community.
The position requires a solid understanding of the operation and performance of building mechanical systems and building envelopes, as well as a basic understanding of technical topics such as engineering physics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, building energy efficiency measures, grid-responsive technologies, decarbonization, and renewable energy. Familiarity with building simulation is desired. Other valuable technical skills include data analysis, scripting, analysis of large data sets, and statistical analysis.
The position is a full-time (exempt) position. Some overnight travel may be required.
Requirements
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or technical field. In addition, the Engineer position requires at least 4 years of relevant experience, and the Senior Engineer position requires at least 8 years. A Master’s degree counts as 2 years of this experience, or a PhD degree counts as 4 years. A PE License counts as 2 years. This experience must include prior work in the residential or commercial energy efficiency or building science arenas.
