WJE's Materials Laboratory based in Austin, Texas, is seeking an ownership-level, Experienced Construction Materials Engineer, to join our team of industry-leading experts in solving some of the most challenging problems in the built world. At WJE, you will apply a principles-first, problem-solving approach to determine root causes of problems, characterize existing materials, develop and specify new materials, and evaluate performance and durability for a variety of applications across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
In addition to collaborating with local architectural, civil, and structural engineers, this position will partner closely with our laboratory teams in WJE's Janney Technical Center (JTC), as well as multi-disciplinary project teams company-wide.
Responsibilities:
- Technical project execution, including performing and training others in hands-on field investigation and laboratory testing; interpreting analytical data and reports; researching historical background of various materials, technical issues, and code requirements; applying sound engineering judgment for the development of innovative yet practical solutions and recommendations; preparing technically excellent client deliverables; and providing high-quality reviews of work by others
- Project management, including client development, project scoping, assembling and managing appropriate project teams, maintaining project schedules and budgets, and managing client expectations and deliverables
- Collaboration with interdisciplinary project teams, including providing expertise to internal and external clients for a variety of new and existing construction materials applications (e.g., concrete materials, historic masonry, pavement)
- Contributions to company-wide objectives, including participating in recruitment, mentoring, and development of up-and-coming consultants; collaborating with other practice leaders for in-house research, knowledge-sharing, and training initiatives; and enhancing WJE’s profile through meaningful involvement in professional organizations, conferences, and technical committees
Qualifications:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Texas or ability to obtain by comity
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in civil, structural, or materials science engineering, with an emphasis on construction materials
- Minimum eight years of relevant construction materials engineering experience, including diagnosing and troubleshooting concrete and concrete constituent material problems
- Strong technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to transition quickly between multiple priorities while maintaining effective coworker and client relationships
Nice-to-Haves:
- Established network of industry contacts specific to construction materials
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with materials scientists (e.g., chemists, petrographers)
- Experience in laboratory management and operations (e.g., developing and implementing specialized laboratory testing programs and assuming responsibility for key aspects of laboratory safety, operations, maintenance, quality assurance, and accreditations)

- Ability to safely work at heights, in confined spaces, and in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations, including outdoors with exposure to temperature extremes
- Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
- Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and other heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
- Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

Annual starting base salary (gross): $105,000 to $165,000. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on several factors including consideration for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base salary is one component of our total compensation package for employees.
