Job Description
The Commodity Management Intern has the opportunity to gain exposure to Western Digital's Procurement process; including vendor management, selection, consolidation, cost, negotiations, contracting. The Commodity Management intern brings their academic and professional experience to Western Digital to help solve internal/external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve supply, processes and services.
Commodity Management interns will have the opportunity to work in one of the following WD locations:
- San Jose, CA with the Real Estate Operations team
- Fremont, CA with the Maintenance, Repair, and Operations team
An intern in this role can expect to gain experience and exposure in the following areas:
- Developing, aligning and implementing commodity strategies
- Negotiating and managing the maintenance of agreements with suppliers that provide the structure for all business relationships between WD and the supply base.
- Developing and presenting cost reduction opportunities to business and management.
- Conducting RFP/RFQs and leading cross-functional teams through the selection process of preferred suppliers with effective scoring criteria to evaluate supplier proposals in accordance with company goals and policies
- Supporting Materials Sourcing related to individual commodities
- Developing and maintaining a program of evaluation for the supplier base which includes certification requirements.
- Driving cost reduction programs, including alternative sourcing and exercise independent judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action.
- Developing, refining and implementing category strategies and tactics that enable the procurement of products and services at the highest value benefit to WD
- Managing supplier relationships with focus on supply risk management, contract risk management and cost management
- Leading cross-functional meetings with various business functions and developing a communication strategy to keep internal clients informed about procurement processes, supplier strategy, and procurement policies
- Analyzing total costs, assisting business functions with ROI analysis, price and rate benchmarking and negotiating favorable business terms to leverage Western Digital purchasing power
Qualifications
- Current Bachelor's or Master's Degree student in Business, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering or a related field, with a graduation date between December 2024 and June 2025
- Prior internship experience, work experience, or relevant academic project experience is preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel (VLookup, Pivot Tables), Word, and Powerpoint
- Ability to problem solve, negotiate, communicate difficult concepts, and manage projects within a fast-paced environment
- Preference given to candidates who will not require relocation to the San Jose/Fremont, CA areas. Relocation will not be offered for this position.
- Right to work in the US without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case to employ you at any point in the future required (for example, H-1B or other employment-based immigration case)
