Job Description

If these represent you, then the Economics and Data Science department in the Flash Business Unit of Western Digital is looking for a Director of Software Engineering.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Exemplify as a technology leader for the Flash Business Unit and report to the VP, Head of Economics and Data Science.
  • Be hands-on and write efficient, reliable, maintainable, and defect-free code. Design and implement software architecture, features for meeting and exceeding business objectives.
  • Lead by example by taking ownership of end-to-end design and development of software solutions within an Agile software development process.
  • Manage and lead a technical team to develop and deliver advanced Causal ML software that shapes capital investments happening at planet scale.
  • Be a legacy builder by delivering strategic software assets while spearheading a world class software engineering delivery process.
  • Remain insatiably curious about emerging industry best practices to create and enhance team processes such as spec and code review.
  • Partner with internal & external stakeholders to refine requirements and disambiguate on the team’s behalf.
  • Oversee the delivery and orchestration of highly complex software projects, taking accountability for the outcome.
  • Cultivate a positive work environment that encourages the team to thrive and grow.
  • Build trust, enhance self-awareness, promote agility, and foster innovation through coaching.
  • Be a go-getter and be technically unbounded.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3+ years’ experience managing software engineers.
  • Experience in DevOps including developing and managing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience in Agile Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Experience data intensive project lifecycle from use case framing, exploratory data analysis, model conception, development, and deployment.
  • Experience in articulating a digital transformation roadmap and driving technology adoption.
  • Exceptional ability to shape and share technical execution plans with stakeholders.
  • 7+ years’ experience in software architecture design, algorithms, and data structures - with deep expertise in one or more system languages such as Java, Python, Golang, C++, C#.
  • 5+ years’ experience in Relational Databases and SQL along with demonstrable proficiency in ETL, and Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree, in Computer Science, ML, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years’ experience in managing software engineers.
  • Experience managing managers.
  • 10+ years’ experience in software architecture design, algorithms, and data structures - with deep expertise in one or more system languages such as Java, Python, Golang, C++, C#.
  • Demonstrable history of forming and nurturing a highly functional team.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, ML, or a related quantitative field.

Skills

  • Exceptional interpersonal and intrapersonal awareness.
  • Exceptional technical communication skills to convey complex ideas and execution plans.
  • Strong problem solving & decision-making.
  • Good knowledge in system language such as Java, Python, Golang, C++, C#, Rust, etc.
  • Good software project management, decision making and adaptability/flexibility.
  • Ability and desire to coach, mentor, and teach others
