Required Education and Experience: Certified Tumor Registry (CTR) or eligibility. Minimum of two years experience in Cancer Registry, as a Florida Qualified Abstractor. Knowledge of basic human/microscopic anatomy, classification of tumors, and staging systems. Knowledge of the difference between benign, uncertain potential, and malignant tumor. Understand the diagnostic procedures used to establish the diagnosis and access the extent of disease. Ability to interpret therapy reports.

Summary/Objective: Performs a variety of tasks associated with collection and abstraction of medical records from hospitals, radiation oncology, and pathology departments and free-standing surgery centers to determine and code primary site(s), histological type, stage of disease, sites of metastases and treatment given; codes and enters data into cancer registry software according to the American College of Surgeons- Commission on Cancer guidelines and Florida Cancer Data Systems-state regulations.


Essential Functions

Identify and code the primary site of cancer, with the understanding of the potential for spread to other organs, tissues, and the lymphatic drainage system for all of the major organs of the body.

Interpret therapy reports such as surgical, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy, and other new and experimental therapy administered for the definitive treatment of cancer.

Maintains monthly incomplete list.

Keep abreast of developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Abstract within six months of diagnosis as required by ACOS/COC and within six months of presentation as required by FCDS.

Assists in other Cancer Registry procedures as assigned
