Individuals are responsible for the support of Vollrath Operations with focus on process optimization through the use of automation. Work includes the collection and study of operations data, conducting engineering analysis, problem-solving, the creation of technical specifications and equipment recommendations, cost / capital analysis, and project management.

Individuals must have demonstrated expertise, and will rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks and will provide consultation on numerous projects and is considered to be a top-level contributor / specialist. Requires limited supervision. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. This is an individual contributor position that still needs to lead and direct the work of others. 

Responsibilities

  • Specific focus on identifying and implementing solutions that improve the overall value stream of the products we develop and produce
  • Identify operations and products that would benefit from implementing automation solutions to eliminate the non-value-added wastes inherent in our current processes
  • Lead large-scale capital projects in any of our Vollrath facilities including but not limited to: data collection, process analysis, equipment specification, equipment installation, development of required control systems, process prove out and overall project management
  • Identify areas in the business where profit improvement can be achieved through the application of automation.
  • Responsible for gathering facts, developing solutions, making and selling recommendations, implementation, and follow-up.
  • Support facility automation engineers with new projects and problem-solving when required
  • Specifically oversee ongoing work on robots and other automated equipment. This includes the generation of software programs and the design of electro-mechanical interfaces.
  • Designs, develops, and supervises the installation of electrical control systems, robotic equipment, and machinery.
  • Trains the maintenance staff and operators in the understanding of automation and its programs. Creates necessary work instructions.  
  • Establish technical specifications for laser marking and robotic equipment, including electrical and mechanical requirements.
  • Establish and maintain documentation for all automation hardware, software, and all electro-mechanical interfaces.
  • Be aware of and establish safety measures for equipment and work cells.
  • Apply problem-solving techniques to a wide variety of complex assignments in all areas of the operation.
  • Successfully facilitate and lead large project teams
  • Lead and/or participate in lean events
  • Knowledge of industrial or manufacturing engineering concepts, such as work measurement, work cell layout, material flow analysis, etc.
  • Consults with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • 7 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with automated equipment.
  • Requires a 4-year bachelor’s degree in a technical field, preferably a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Graduate degree in Engineering or Business
  • Solid technical skills in the field of automation
  • Experience with robotics, CNC, and PLC applications, including the ability to program and troubleshoot
  • Strong aptitude for problem-solving
  • Ability to gather pertinent information and then assemble and present business case justifications for improvements and small/medium capital projects
  • Good project organization and leadership skills, detail-orientated
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter with a strong “sense of urgency”
  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams
  • Familiar with lean practices
