Position: Property Accountant

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Location: Northeast Washington, DC; in office 5 days a week

Salary: $65K-$90K based on experience

The Property Management Accountant is responsible for all financial and analytical procedures for a group of assigned multi-family properties, working closely with the Community Managers on performance, variances, and reconciliations. This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with prior property accounting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs accounting, financial reporting and analysis of all assigned multi-family properties on a monthly schedule and coordinate with Community Managers on performance, variances and reconciliation issues.
  • For each multi-family property in the assigned portfolio:
    • Monitor and report the daily cash balances.
    • Prepare monthly bank account reconciliations.
    • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports with annotations.
    • Reconcile gross rent potential, prepaid rent, rent receivable, accounts payable, and accrued expenses with subsidiary ledgers on a monthly schedule to ensure accuracy.
    • Perform quarterly and semi-annual internal audit functions as assigned.
  • Prepare annual audit packages for all assigned multi-family properties to assist with audits, reviews, compilations, and tax return preparation.
  • Liaise with external CPA firm on matters related to the annual audits and tax returns.
  • Prepare fixed asset, Prepaid and Accrual schedules and full month end close.
  • Analyze and maintain escrow accounts (tax and insurance), loan amortization, and replacement reserve activity of each assigned multi-family property as needed.
  • Assist Community Managers with budget preparation, financial statement review, and other support as assigned.
  • Perform annual completion of DC Property Income and Expense forms.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance with 3+ years of real estate accounting experience, with a strong preference for multi-family experience.
  • Previous experience in a real estate and construction environment is highly desired.
  • A thorough knowledge of GAAP is required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Exemplary problem-solving and analytic skills.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with a keen sense of urgency, works well under pressure, and consistently meets deadlines.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Yardi software is highly desirable.
  • CPA or CMA certification is preferred but not required.
