Position: Controller ( Property Management & Construction)

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Location: Northeast Washington, DC

UIP is in search of an enthusiastic, solution-driven Controller. As a key member of the Accounting team, the Controller will prioritize collaboration and teamwork to accomplish shared objectives. Through mentorship and guidance, the Controller will play an essential role in the professional growth of your colleagues.

The ideal candidate will have a background in multifamily real estate and/or construction accounting, and a substantial track record as a Controller/VP of Finance or Sr. Accounting Manager within a rapidly growing organization. They will exhibit a strong inclination towards process optimization and documentation. Furthermore, the successful candidate will excel as a people manager and serve as a collaborative member of the senior leadership team. Lastly, they will be our resident expert on Yardi software for Property and Development Accounting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee property accounting and financial reporting, including annual financial statement audits for multi-family and commercial properties.
  • Lead and manage the Property Accounting and Construction Accounting departments, ensuring the team meets its goals and responsibilities.
  • Manage the end-to-end monthly accounting and reporting processes for a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, and development properties.
  • Conduct monthly review of the WIP calculation.
  • Support the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the month-end closing process and investor reporting for the company's entire portfolio.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of financial transaction recording, including property purchases, sales, refinancing, and leasehold asset management.
  • Establish schedules and supervise the reconciliation of company bank accounts and intercompany financial statements.
  • Collaborate with corporate and third-party accountants, providing timely information and documents for inquiries related to financial statements, tax returns, K-1s, 1099s, and audits.
  • Evaluate internal financial controls to ensure their effectiveness.
  • Establish, monitor, and enforce policies, systems, and procedures.
  • Safeguard assets by implementing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Work closely with department leaders to develop and execute corporate strategies.
  • Review and approve monthly/quarterly/annual reports for owners, investors, and external entities.
  • Assist owners and operations personnel in interpreting financial statements.
  • Prepare compliance responses on behalf of owners to government agencies and financial institutions.
  • Supervise the transition of property accounting records when necessary.
  • Ensure that all funds received daily are accurately recorded in the financial records and deposited into the appropriate bank accounts.
  • Provide training to new and existing staff, particularly in handling non-routine financial transactions.
  • Collaborate with your direct reports to set annual goals and objectives, monitoring their progress to enhance staff development.
  • Review and approve monthly management fee calculations.
  • Participate in review of payroll and tax reports for the company.
  • Prepare Cash Flow projections, Forecasts, KPIs, and assist in budgeting process.
  • Undertake other assignments and projects as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Business with an emphasis in Accounting.
  • A minimum of 8 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibilities in the multi-family and commercial real estate operating and development industry.
  • Proficiency in financials, government regulations, and local and state statutes.
  • High-level expertise in Excel, Yardi, Nexus, QuickBooks, Sage 300/Timberline is strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership and management experience with a focus on mentorship, coaching, and staff development.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple competing tasks and meeting company deadlines.
  • Must possess strong organization skills, keen attention to detail, and be self-directed, team player

  • Strong initiative and a focus on enhancing overall performance, and data driven analysis.
