The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), at the University of Minnesota announces an outstanding opportunity to join a dynamic and growing academic medicine department providing care as the Medical Director of an adult Transitional Care Unit (TCU) within a large, academic healthcare center. In addition, the candidate will support inpatient consultations, and have an outpatient general physiatry clinic.
The M Health Fairview TCU is a 28-bed licensed skilled nursing located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River and University of Minnesota campus. The unit serves patients that are medically complex that no longer need acute hospitalization. Common diagnoses include stroke, brain injury, debility/complex medical, spinal cord injury, cardiac/pulmonary, orthopedic, other neurological conditions, oncology, transplant, and limb loss.
As the TCU Medical Director, the candidate’s responsibilities will include serving as the clinical leader to help ensure that exceptional patient care is delivered by fostering positive collaboration among care teams through open communication. The candidate will provide the medical management of a subset of the population in the TCU that require higher-level coordination of care, management of rehabilitation goals, and discharge planning. Ideal candidate will have experience providing leadership in the inpatient setting, driving performance of key clinical metrics, and treating complex medical conditions. This position also works closely with the leadership of the M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center (located within the same building). In addition to the work on the TCU, the candidate will provide hospital physiatry consultation and have an outpatient clinic. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Physiatrists must be a graduate of an accredited PM&R residency training program, be board-certified or board-eligible with the American Board of PM&R (ABPM&R), have at least two (2) years of training, or experience, in the medical management of inpatients requiring rehabilitation services, be eligible to obtain a Minnesota Board of Medical Practice license, and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for credentialing and privileges. Applicants must possess the skills to manage change and communicate effectively in a rapidly expanding department. Enthusiasm, a collaborative nature, and an interest in cultivating a thriving academic rehabilitation program are essential to the success of the department and the TCU.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- As the leader of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, the TCU Medical Director is responsible for partnering with the management team in organizing and directing physiatry services and practicing on the unit, in agreement with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and standards, and rules and regulations
- The Medical Director will work closely with leadership and staff team members to develop, monitor, and maintain performance metrics, process improvement, and quality and safety metrics
- Liaise with hospital teams about critical needs – e.g., capacity issues, etc.
- Represent the TCU during hospital meetings and disseminate information to problem-solve issues on the ARC
- Assists with regulatory, compliance, and reimbursement appeals
- Assist with preparation for, and participate in, regulatory visits
- Serve as a role model in setting a standard for delivery of patient-centered, comprehensive rehabilitative care
- Forge partnerships, establish trust, and build strong relationships with referring departments and units to achieve top performance in patient experience and outcomes
- Provide inpatient physiatry consultations at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC)-East Bank and West Bank, as well as other M Health Fairview affiliated sites
- Participation in call coverage at the ARC on a rotating basis and provide inpatient coverage for vacations
- Grow an outpatient practice, including general PM&R follow-up clinics
- Work with APP’s and trainees (medical students, residents, fellows, visiting students, and other allied health professionals)
- Close all patient encounters before eight (8) calendar days
As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the candidate will join an active academic physiatry clinical practice and a growing academic department. Faculty members mentor residents, fellows, medical students, and allied health professionals; including teaching, training, and general supervision in a clinical setting. Academic track and rank are determined by the applicant’s qualifications and interests. Academic time is used to pursue scholarly work in the candidate’s area of specialty/research expertise. Faculty will be active in their national organizations and foster an academic environment.
