Scope of Position:

We are offering a unique job opportunity to conduct research in an exciting field of Science and Technology! This job provides a wide range of opportunities to invent and bring to realization new life-changing next-generation Communication technologies for the 5G Mobile Communication era and beyond. The successful candidate will work closely with teams of outstanding Research Scientists and Engineers located at our historical state-of-art research center in Corning, NY, as well as other global locations. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for research projects and/or activities focusing on network architectures of optical and wireless communication systems – including Software Define Networks (SDNs). The candidate will guide efforts for building laboratory testing and evaluation capabilities in optical and wireless network architectures and software-based networking technologies; use software-based tools to investigate and identify system technical challenges; and play a key role in the development of novel system architecture concepts for Corning’s future connectivity products, by conceiving, designing, and participating in the execution and evaluation of laboratory system experiments. The candidate will play a leading role in the creation of relevant IP to protect key inventions related to novel networking solutions.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Conceive, propose, and lead research projects/activities involving novel communication systems and networks
• Design and perform experiments
• Work closely with other research scientists, engineers and technicians to execute multi-disciplinary experiments
• Collaborate on various fiber-optic and wireless projects and execute technology transfer with various Development organizations in Corning, NY, and other Corning sites.

Travel requirements: ~5 % travel - some international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/week, with extended hours if needed.

Required Skills:

• Strong background in communication technologies (fiber-optic systems, wireless communication systems) with industrial experience of at least 2 years
• In-depth understanding of end-to-end Mobile and IP Network Architectures (including FTTH, backhaul, front-haul, etc.). Knowledge of new trends in networking technologies - including Software-Define Networking (SDN), Mobile Network virtualization (C-RAN, V-RAN), Network Convergence, etc.
• Direct work experience with communication network design, implementation, and testing - including the PHY and higher layers (L1/L2/L3) performance
• Working knowledge of communication and networking protocols and standards – including GPON, SDH/SONET, SNMP, TCP/IP, 3GPP’s LTE, LTE Advanced, 5G mobile, etc.
• Familiarization with new 5G wireless technologies including Massive MIMO, new Radio Access technologies, Self-Optimizing Networks (SON), Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), Small Cells, Base Station functional split, etc.
• Hands-on laboratory experience

Education and Experience:

• MSc. or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Physics or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years industrial experience with emphasis on network architecture (including wireless network architectures, fiber-optic network architectures, and software defined networks).

Desired Skills:
