The Assistant Managing Attorney will act as both a Trial Attorney with a reduced case count and an Assistant Managing Attorney of the claims legal department in a specific office.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists Managing Attorney in supervisory activities such as evaluating, mentoring, and monitoring the performance of subordinates.
  • Performs the work of a Trial Attorney as needed but with a reduced caseload to ensure sufficient office time is available to attend to supervisory duties.
  • Handles Legal and Claims inquiries and works with and collaborates with other departments whenever needed, requested or appropriate.
  • Alternate with, and serve as backup for, the Managing Attorney in attendance at committees and staffings, such as doubleheader and settlement committee.
  • Personally, or through others, provides training of all levels of Trial Attorneys and Hearing Representatives. Also provides mentoring and training to other departments.
  • Ensures efficient operations in the Legal Department with guidance and assistance of the Managing Attorney.
  • Responsible for ensuring that legal claims are handled appropriately and that the standards of practice of are being maintained.
  • Works with the Managing Attorney towards implementing quality control measures; works to ensure that the existing standards of performance are maintained and helps participate in mentoring, education, and training of the legal staff when necessary.
  • Acting as a backup to the Managing Attorney in the role of liaison to the Claims Manager and Branch Manager. This includes attending meetings held by these individuals and participating in events and activities to be coordinated with the Claims Manager and Branch Manager.
  • Assists Managing Attorney in receiving, investigating, and resolving complaints or criticisms from the Claims Department, including Claims management and other Zenith departments.
  • Apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Works harmoniously and cooperatively with others.
  • Responds positively to direction and performance feedback.
  • Consistently maintains professional and appropriate demeanor.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Juris Doctorate and member in good standing with the State Bar required

Experience Qualifications

  • 6+ Years of practical legal experience, including substantial workers' compensation involvement required.
  • 2+ Years supervisory experience required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to lift legal files, including documents and exhibits, up to a weight of 30 pounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be willing and able to drive extensively using all means of public transportation, as well as capable of prolonged automobile driving, more than three hours a day, to widely dispersed venues.
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing.

The expected salary range for this position is $150K to $177,742.05. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law.
