How will you make an impact?

The Sr. Welder performs welding processes on steel parts and assemblies to required tolerances using welding metals and metal alloys. Determines layouts and welds parts and assemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications. Monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. Performs a variety of metal finishing procedures to prepare part for paint or to make repairs. 

A Day in the Life:

  • Positions and clamps components of fabricated metal products prior to welding.  Sets up and adjusts welding equipment as needed, changing tips, adjusting temperature, feed rates, gas flow, type of gases, etc.  Welds metal parts together by applying proper welding procedures such as MIG, TIG, and resistance welding within design specifications.  Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.  Verifies that standard specifications, custom, prototypes, etc., are welded per blueprint. Inspects parts prior to starting job and upon completion to verify material accuracy and quality. 
  • Performs review of first piece production to confirm compliance by measuring, verifying weld quality and finish.  Verifies dimensions and makes adjustments as needed to ensure proper fit and specified tolerances are maintained.
  • Removes burrs and sharp edges using portable grinders, deburr machine and files.  Properly tracks and disposes of scrap and completes non-conforming tickets.  Directly responsible for all scrap/rework that is created by their cell.
  • Verifies and completes job routing by signing router sheet, submitting orders to be closed and parts to be posted to inventory.  Utilizes color coded process to communicate part needs with the press shop and to accomplish timely production.
  • Troubleshoots work related problems by applying knowledge and experience to identify cause and take necessary steps to correct situation and contacts supervisor when needed.  Advises supervisor of quality problems and the status of jobs.
  • Performs other duties, provides support and coverage on all operations on line as requested by supervisor. Cross training and flexibility required.
  • Performs all duties using required safety procedures and equipment according to company policies and practices within guidelines of ISO standards, quality, and safety. Maintains clean and organized work area that supports co-workers as well as safety and efficiency.
  • Engages, initiates, and suggest initiatives that support team goals and continuous improvement in process.
  • Communicates effectively within cell or with other departments to relay key information.  Open to and asks for suggestions of others regarding production issues and goals.
  • Performs all job duties consistent with the Code of Ethics and the 4-I Values, serves as a role model in the workplace. Trains and mentors new employees or transitioning workers in the area.
  • Utilizes computer systems to check e-mail, complete on line training and complete Performance Management and Development (PMD) annual review process.

Keys to Success:

Education

Requires high school diploma or GED.

Experience

  • 1-2 years welding experience and or welding education.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • MIG and TIG Certified preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Beginner Computer skills or willingness to learn.
  • Standing, bending, reaching and handling bulky parts is common to the job. Frequently lifts up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to read and differentiate part numbers, labels, and work instructions.
