Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.

The Green Stormwater Operations Group (GSO) is a subdivision of the Operations branch within the Philadelphia Water Department. GSO is responsible for the management of activities related to the operation and functionality of publicly funded stormwater management practice (SMP) sites to ensure that their performance meets compliance obligations.

Job Description

The Environmental Science Intern for the GSO group will be assisting senior group scientists in their daily roles and summer field work pertaining to plant health. The intern will be responsible for primarily office duties with possible field assignments related to environmental science. Office duties can include but are not limited to evaluating field reports, data management in Microsoft Access and Excel, various GIS mapping exercises, work order management/creation in CityWorks, and conducting research for various projects.
Field duties can include but are not limited to site inspection and assessment, data collection, field sketching, assistance in inspections of both surface and subsurface components, assistance with vegetation survivability studies. Field duties would take the intern to all parts of the city

Essential Functions

Candidates with interests pertaining to sustainability, green infrastructure, stormwater management are encouraged to apply.
GIS Mapping, Plant Science, Field Sketching, and Native Plant knowledge are helpful but not required. Strong organization skills, ability to work independently and within a team, attention to detail, adaptability, self self-motivation

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Applicants are required to meet the following minimum requirements:

- Must be enrolled as a full-time student

-  Valid US driver’s license recommended, though a personal vehicle is not required.

Work-Life

This is a full-time, in-person position, schedules will be determined during the interview.
