Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) is a municipal department with approximately 2500 employees which provides water and wastewater treatment and services for the City of Philadelphia and some surrounding counties.

The intern will work closely with the Green Stormwater and Stream Design - Landscape Design staff within the GSSD Unit. The Landscape Design team’s primary responsibilities are landscape installation, design reviews, resource development, landscape contract management, data analysis, field research, and innovation to streamline the GSSD Implementation Program. The team also works closely with the GSSD Planning, GSSD Design, Green Stormwater Operations (Maintenance), and Construction groups.

Job Description

The candidate will assist landscape architects, engineers, and city planners in the unit with ongoing efforts to plan, develop, and promote green infrastructure; identify, design, and manage green infrastructure projects; and research and implement innovative green stormwater management techniques. While resources and field manuals will be provided, skills in tree identification and familiarity with regional plant species are necessary.

This is not a remote position. Multiple tasks will be field-based in Philadelphia.

  • Construction and inspection pictures
  • Field collection & data analysis
  • GSI landscape & GSI design research
  • Composing and editing GSI practice documents
  • GSI schematic concept development
  • GSI design plan review
  • Mapping & graphic images development

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience with the following programs is advantageous:
• Adobe Suite (Acrobat Pro, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) / Bluebeam
• AutoCAD (version 2019)
• ArcGIS (version 10.7.1)
• Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

Work-Life

This is a full-time summer internship position, 37.5 hours/week, schedules will be determined during the interview. The position is not remote, and any candidate must be able to report in person to various sites around the city as needed.

Qualifications

Full time undergraduate or graduate student with core curriculum in the field of:

Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Urban Design, or Environmental Science students
