OVERVIEW:
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis seeks a highly motivated Grants Intern to join our Development team. The intern will be a vital member of our fundraising team, helping to communicate the importance of our work to foundation and government donors and raising funds to help the Museum realize its mission. This position is highly flexible and allows the intern to work fully on-site or hybrid format with flexible hours, according to the intern’s availability.
The team strives to provide interns with challenging project-based learning experiences that are tailored to the intern’s interests and area of study. Because the Museum’s work is so wide-reaching, there are abundant grant-related tasks from which to choose. Does your inner child love dinosaurs? Help us identify new donors for our new Mission Jurassic initiative. Are you passionate about the arts? Work to develop fundraising appeals for our visiting artist program and art galleries. Planning to pursue a career with a local nonprofit? Get solid experience writing and managing grants for the Museum’s community initiatives. We’ll work with you to develop a roster of projects that you’re excited about and which will make you stand out to a prospective future employer.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research foundation and government funding sources to identify potential new donors whose priorities align with the Museum’s mission and project goals.
- Write first drafts of letters of intent (LOIs) to potential donors, matching the Museum’s unique selling points with the donors’ interests.
- Contribute to the development of full proposals, conducting research, and writing compelling narratives.
- Write first drafts of project reports, liaising with various museum departments to collect information and data.
- When on-site, provide occasional administrative assistance to the Development Team, scanning and/or filing donor contracts, correspondence, proposals, reports &, etc., and updating the donor and grants databases.
- When on-site, assist Major Gift Officers and the Development Department Executive Coordinator as needed with departmental mailings, donor correspondence & etc.
- Provide support and assistance for event preparation, setup, and stewardship for events such as the AfterDark series, Museum by Moonlight, and other development-related events.

REQUIREMENTS:
This internship can be a great learning experience for students in almost any field of study. The main requirement is to have solid writing skills. In addition, candidates should:
- Be actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (relevant fields include but are not limited to Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Museum Studies, Nonprofit Management, Philanthropic Studies, Science Communication, etc.)
- Be available to work at least 20 hours per week
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Have excellent writing skills and provide a writing sample as part of your application
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Must work a flexible weekday schedule Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment that values diversity and is child-centric.
- Interact with visitors and co-workers in a supportive, positive, and friendly manner.
- Maintain behavior patterns acceptable to co-workers and the general museum culture.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods.
