SUMMARY:
The department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Texas A&M University-Commerce seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor to begin in fall 2024. We are open to all specializations, but are specifically seeking those with teaching interests and/or experience in the area of research methods.
TAMUC is a northeastern satellite campus of Texas A&M University located in Commerce, Texas. The university enrolls approximately 8000 undergraduate and 3500 graduate students annually. Our students represent a cross-section of backgrounds and come to us from the local communities, greater Dallas-Fort Worth area, and many other places across the globe. The university is within 90 minutes of the thriving Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
The department of Sociology and Criminal Justice has eight full-time faculty supporting over 200 undergraduate majors and minors. Our undergraduate students work closely with our faculty and in the greater community. Students can participate in the national Criminal Justice honors society, Alpha Phi Sigma, and the TAMUC Sociology and Criminal Justice Society. We also support approximately 80 graduate students who are enrolled in our specialty online accelerated Master of Science in Applied Criminology program. Our graduate program has been consistently ranked in the list of Best Online Master's in Criminal Justice Programs by the U.S. News and World Report.
Criminal justice faculty at TAMUC actively participate in teaching, research, and service at multiple levels. The typical teaching load is a 3-4 with summer teaching opportunities and the potential for course buyouts for service and research. Our faculty teach a blend of in-person, online, graduate, and undergrad courses.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate criminal justice and criminology courses
- Perform service for the profession, the various levels of the university, and the community
- Design, conduct and publish scholarly research
- Prepare class syllabi
- Develop and deliver instructions both online and face-to-face
- Maintain knowledge of current trends in learning with best practices in teaching and technological applications in the classroom, including online teaching
- Practice collegiality within the department and university community
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related field with a relevant concentration. ABDs will be considered; however, a Ph.D. must be in hand at the start of the appointment. Those who hold a J.D. only will not be considered.
- Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Familiarity with university-level teaching, research, and service duties.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
- Applicants who use quantitative techniques in their research and who are able/willing to teach research methods are preferred
- Applicants with publications within criminal justice/criminology are preferred
- Applicants who have taught research methods are preferred
