Swiss Machinist

General Overview

The Swiss Machinist sets up, operates, and tends Swiss machines to pierce, cut, and drill or otherwise shape or cut metal or plastic materials, such as wire, rod, or bar stock. The Swiss Machinist controls machines and processes; inspects equipment, structures or material; reads work orders and blueprints; evaluates work order information to determine completeness and takes initiative to seek additional information as needed; determines the most effective and efficient method, approach and tools to complete the work; handles/moves materials, tools and equipment; troubleshoots issues; and ensures that completed work meets required specifications. This work requires a high degree of attention to detail and precision, as the Swiss Machinist is responsible for maximizing set up efficiency and machine run time, minimizing machine downtime, and crafting high quality finished parts that meet or exceed industry expectations. The Swiss Machinist is also responsible for ongoing learning and sharing knowledge and expertise with co-workers.

Responsibilities

  1. Study blueprints and job routers for information on specifications, materials, and tooling to determine requirements to efficiently set up new jobs.
  2. Select proper cutting tools using knowledge of material properties and tool
  3. Position, secure, and set up tools in tool holders on machines and verify their
  4. Program/operate controls to set cutting speeds, depths, and feed
  5. Inspect set up parts to verify conformance with specifications and send sample workpieces to inspection to ensure in-process quality control sampling requirements are met, as indicated on router.
  6. Monitor processes, materials and operations and if needed, adjust machine controls and change tool settings to keep dimensions within specified tolerances.
  7. Clean and prepare parts for finishing and shipping to meet internal standards and as indicated on print or job router.
  8. Meet or exceed job order expectations (set up, cycle time, total hours).
  9. Update company information on work routers to improve re-order
  10. Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform preventative maintenance functions on equipment and tools
