Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

When our sellers make a sale, the Square Banking team helps them manage and understand their business finances with products that include Checking, Savings, Loans, Bill Pay, and Credit Cards to smooth out cash flow. With this suite of products, we ensure that our customers get access to the funds they need when they need them, and that they can always understand and control where their money is going. We partner with platform and infrastructure teams to move billions of dollars each year on behalf of our sellers.

As a Senior Android Software Engineer on the Banking Mobile team, you will play a crucial role in building and refining the mobile applications that allow our sellers to manage their finances on the go. You will work closely with a team of talented Android engineers, collaborating with product managers, designers, and other engineers to develop high-quality mobile solutions that meet the needs of our customers.

The engineering team is composed of iOS and Android engineers. Our projects leverage design-driven decisions to deliver features across Square’s mobile applications. We also talk directly to existing and prospective merchants about their needs and pain to identify opportunities to improve their experience.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain advanced applications for the Android platform, ensuring robust and reliable performance
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features for our banking products
  • Continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximize development efficiency and product impact
  • Develop using a range of native Android technologies (eg, OkHttp, Retrofit, Dagger, custom Android OS) across Square mobile apps
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while adhering to best practices in Android development
  • Participate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and share knowledge within the team

Qualifications

You Have:

  • 5+ years of professional Android development experience
  • A strong understanding of the Swift programming language and Android SDK
  • A track record of delivering high-quality mobile applications with a focus on performance and user experience
  • Proficiency in native Android development using standard tools and frameworks
  • Experience with unidirectional data flow and declarative UI frameworks (eg, Jetpack Compose, Workflow)
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for mobile applications
  • A passion for clean code and an eye for simplicity and pragmatism
  • A desire to build products that our merchants will depend on every day to run their business
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
