Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school, seeks an Assistant Director of Facilities to work at their Washington, D.C. and Bethesda, M.D. campus. The Assistant Director of Facilities is a critical member of the facilities team and, with the Director of Facilities, is responsible for the physical plant operations, including all buildings and grounds, utilities, energy management systems, and safety/security systems to provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Director of Facilities works closely with all the facilities staff while directly supervising daily operations, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and event set-ups. This person is a hands-on professional with excellent planning, management, and communication skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop constructive relationships with coworkers and School community members, work as a team member, and promote a team mentality across the facilities department to develop, support, and implement the department's goals, objectives, and service philosophy.
  • Plan and schedule daily work and special projects; maintain records and coordinate all work with the assistance of the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Plan, organize, and complete work orders, projects, and preventive maintenance functions.
  • Supervise and mentor the maintenance personnel and logistics/driving personnel.
  • Oversee and coordinate daily service and special projects with the third-party cleaning company.
  • Attend weekly events and meetings and coordinate set-ups between facilities, cleaning, security, and food service.
  • Manage building energy consumption, tracking historical costs and consumption, reduction strategies, demand response programs, and procurement contracts.
  • Participate in strategic planning to evaluate and project future facility needs.
  • Participate in emergency and crisis planning.
  • Manage compliance for life and safety, elevators, backflow preventers, emergency generators, lead water testing, asbestos, radon, MSDS, energy consumption, and other state and federal requirements.
  • Oversee outside contractors for projects.
  • Coordinate work with other departments.
  • Maintain detailed records and reports of work performed and work planned.
  • Prepare budget estimates, control expenditures, and make recommendations to the Director of Facilities.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the facilities department by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information to administrative staff and professional colleagues in a written and oral format.
  • Possess exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other program and contractual staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, and instruct a team of technical and maintenance personnel that may include contractual workers.
  • Working knowledge of building maintenance and repair methods and requirements; building automation systems and work order programs; operational systems, procedures, standards, and practices in various building tasks; mechanical, food service, electrical equipment, elevators, fire systems, and preventive maintenance programs; contracting methods, cost estimating and ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications; Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration

Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in engineering, architecture, or construction management. BS degree preferred.
  • Or Proficiency in areas of facilities management, HVAC, Journeyman or Master Electrician license preferred.
  • 5 years' experience in facility management or as a commercial building superintendent. Educational facility experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to perform required duties for this position, including having the ability to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting and pass a background check.
  • Participate in a random drug testing program.
  • Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
