Estimator 1 at Shiel Sexton
The Estimator position reports directly to the Project Executive of Estimating. Primary responsibilities include establishing rapport and open communication with subcontractors, potential clients and design consultants, and leading the estimating efforts from project conception through final pricing, using a variety of contracting methods.

- Review and understand a given set of construction documents in order to perform detailed and quantify takeoffs.
- Performing detailed quantity takeoffs and understanding unit pricing, in order to create milestone level budgets.
- Working in small teams of estimators and project managers to collaborate on bid/budget strategies.
- Developing professional relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Analyze and understand subcontractor proposals on bid day in high stress atmosphere.
- Managing the budgeting/bidding process on individual projects, with specific focus on projects ranging from small to medium size.
- Working with design consultants and subcontractors in a professional and collaborative manner to achieve the owner’s desired outcomes.
- Reviewing and understanding the plans and specifications, with an ability to identify errors and ask clear and concise questions for clarification.
- Creating and communicating accurate scopes of work to subcontractors.
- Validating subcontractor proposals quickly and accurately.
- Preparing deliverables for clients, including scope of work write-ups, value engineering ideas, quantity takeoffs, assumptions, and clarifications.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Three plus years of experience in estimating/preconstruction in commercial construction;
- Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management or similar discipline is preferred;
- Construction operations experience is preferred;
- Sound knowledge of estimating practices;
- Strong working knowledge of Onscreen Takeoff and Microsoft Office Suite;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Detail oriented, logical, and methodical approach to problem solving;
- Team player with ability to work independently and autonomously; and
- Solid organizations, time management, and prioritization skills.
