The Senior Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for providing leadership by developing strategies for effective environmental, health, safety, and sanitation, programs for the SCN BestCo Mooresville facilities. Primary responsibilities include management of all EHS and Sanitation requirements for SCN BestCo Mooresville to assure compliance, continue building a proactive safety culture, reduce costs, and maintain consistency. This position has hands on management responsibility for plant environmental compliance, and management oversight of Health and Safety Specialist(s), Sanitation Management, and Environmental Specialist(s). The Senior Manager, EHS, is responsible for influencing site leadership to improve EHS management and performance in their areas of responsibility. Responsible for driving continuous improvement of EHS performance and serves as the primary site contact for EHS-related government agencies (i.e., OSHA, EPA, DOT, FDA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set expectations for the EHS team to ensure compliance of health and safety requirements and regulations enforced through OSHA, DOT, FDA, and other state and federal regulations.
  • Act as site leader for internally motivated safety values, where the team works together to promote organizational pride in safety, care for coworkers’ personal safety, and encourages discussion about safe and unsafe behaviors.
  • Drive the direction of EHS programs by using a data driven approach to safety evaluating severity, occurrence, and detectability approach to risks.
  • Recognize, assess, and control programs for safety and health hazards in the facility.
  • Review, develop, and implement safety training programs, policies, and procedures. Monitor programs to, and ensure compliance of, training and records.
  • Compile, analyze, and report data relating to occupational and environmental health issues which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health including chemical exposure, radiation, smoke, fumes, noise, temperatures, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics.
  • Manage all federal, state, and local environmental programs (Air, SPCC, Storm Water, etc.) and permits to ensure compliance. Act as company representative with government agencies in environmental, safety, and health matters affecting the company.
  • Recommend and budget EHS capital expenditure items. Review proposed capital expenditure requests and approve them from an EHS perspective.
  • Establish and maintain EHS metrics, record keeping, and communications. Manage and upgrade systems to track and evaluate work related injuries & near misses. Utilize historical and leading indicators to prioritize actions focused on continuous improvement.
  • Partner with HR to provide guidance for injuries and workers’ compensation claims management.
  • Identify safety improvement projects on the production floor and coordinate cross functional resources to complete projects and mitigate risks. Utilize the Safety Committee (and SNC BestCo employees who are leaders in safety) where feasible to complete projects and mitigate risks.
  • Manage EHS vendors, expenses, & budget.

People Leader Responsibilities

Senior Manager, EHS carries out People Leader Responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws. Direct Supervision of Health & Safety Specialist(s), Sanitation Manager, and Environmental Specialist(s). Coordinate and manage efforts of volunteer safety committee members.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety, Engineering, Science, Industrial Hygiene or other technical field.
  • 8 years’ experience in an Environmental, Health & Safety position in a manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years of experience in an EHS leadership role.
  • Experience developing and implementing EHSS systems and processes including EHS audits, EHS learning & development, and environmental excellence.
  • Prior experience in environmental regulations such as wastewater, stormwater, and hazardous waste.
  • Prior experience establishing a safety culture in a company.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.
  • Proven track record of influencing key decision makers at the executive level regarding safety and environmental strategies and the ability to successfully put into practice those strategies and integrate them into the day-to-day business activities.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of current OSHA, and governmental environmental regulations.
  • Effective public speaker, facilitator, trainer, and problem solver.
  • Comfortable working in a cross-functional matrix organization.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or other safety-related discipline.
  • Registered professional certification from a nationally recognized board (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Safety Auditor, OSHA 500, or similar certification).
  • Prior cGMP Food or Pharmaceutical experience.
  • Basic understanding of sanitation best practice and master sanitation schedules.
  • HAZMAT training.
