Axon, based in Raleigh, NC, manufactures shrink sleeving, tamper evident banding and stretch sleeve applicators as well as heat shrink tunnels that are engineered for reliability, flexibility and value. Utilizing continuous motion technology, Axon’s product labeling equipment applications include beverages, processed foods in tubs and jars, cultured dairy products, pharmaceuticals, health & beauty aids, novelties, and household products.
- Responsible for all aspects of the design process including analyzing customer specifications, application requirements, designing mechanical components of the machinery, configuring systems, fabricating hardware, creating line layouts, maintaining documentation and communication with internal and external customers.
- Application of mechanical engineering knowledge of machinery principles and materials, manufacturing methods and processes to ensure designs are safe, functional, practical, economical and satisfying customer operating requirements.
- Design and model machined and fabricated parts including materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, delrin, lexan, sheet metal, weldments and castings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Design machined and fabricated parts which includes shafts, bearings and housings, drive components, mounting plates, spacers, structural frame weldments, sheet metal components, including selection of commercial hardware and components.
- Generate 3D models and drawings in CAD software (SolidWorks/AutoCAD) and completing Bill of Materials in ERP system (Syteline) including details required to complete manufacturing effort for proper handoff to planning/purchasing.
- Draft multiple-view parts drawings using good Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances practices.
- Draft multiple-view assembly, sub-assembly and layout drawings.
- Communicate with Sales, Purchasing, Production and Aftermarket relative to machine specifications, design information, machine capabilities, concepts and problem solving.
- Analyze and prioritize projects based on internal company needs and customer schedules, or as defined by the Engineering Director.
- Interface with manufacturing to ensue machinery designs are properly fabricated, machined, and assembled which may include revising of mechanical design specifications/drawings.
- Interface with assembly techs to support mechanical completion and testing of equipment.
- Interface with all other departments e.g. sales/marketing, aftermarket, field services, and purchasing to coordinate work/projects to ensure customer on-time delivery and quality.
- Revise parts and create BOM’s to maintain updated drawings and complete engineering change notifications.
- Review project milestones daily to ensure timely execution.

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar field desired.
- 4 plus years’ experience in mechanical design and/or application engineering.
- SolidWorks and AutoCAD experience required.
- Experience with designing packaging machinery, plus an in-depth knowledge of product handling, machine capabilities and assembly principles.
- Ability to use mathematics together with the analytical use of engineering charts, tables, and use of various types of precision measuring instruments.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems/sensors commonly used in packaging machinery design.
- Good knowledge of assembly principles and machining capabilities.
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ERP Systems).
- Excellent verbal and communication skills, with the ability to work harmoniously within a team.
- Ability to successfully coordinate a multi-tasked role.Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Some travel is required.
