Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse Preceptor functions as a teacher and mentor in guiding, directing and supervising technical nursing activities of the nurse preceptee. Provides guidance and consultation when needed, regarding effective patient care and scope of practice. Creates formal and informal learning opportunities for peers regarding practice issues, technology and/or current research, identifies and intervenes when staff weaknesses are identified. The Registered Nurse Preceptor is responsible for the oversight of the preceptee in the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. The Registered Nurse Preceptor also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice without assistance to neonates. Utilizes the chain of command when necessary to ensure patient well-being and appropriateness of care to neonates from post delivery stabilization through discharge.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

  • Current and valid state Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Basic Fetal monitoring certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • NRP 30 days upon hire preferred.
  • Completion of preceptor class.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
